Connecting to shared hard drive with Apple Airport Extreme Base Station.

Hi there,

I'm trying to connect to my shared hard drive, which is jacked into the USB port of my Apple Airport Extreme Base Station. From my Macbook, I can see and access the drive; however, I do not know how to locate and access the drive from Vista. Can someone guide me on how to connect to the drive? Thank you!

I'm having the same problem! I've been searching the 'net for hours to find a solution but it seems all the posts regarding the Airport are slanted to Mac users only. You're the first person I've found who is using a PC with Vista.

The Apple so-called "manual" is totally useless in this respect...

Re: Connecting to shared hard drive with Apple Airport Extreme Base Station.

hi both,

I have just experienced the same problem, however there is a simple (if not particularly attractive) fix, which will allow you to see the drive from a vista (and I believe Mac) pc

The issue seems to be that when used with Windows, the Airport Extreme only supports disks which are formatted in FAT32.

You can try formatting the drive in XP, but if the drive is larger than 32GB, you will get an error message telling you that the drive is too large for FAT32 (not sure that you can format in FAT32 from Vista, - I have both Vista and XP pc's)

Assuming that your drives are larger than 32GB , there are a couple of tools available which will allow you to format a much larger drive, I used one called 'swisskniife', which you can download from CompuApps, Inc. - Download Swissknife
and successfully formatted a 500GB drive. As soon as I plugged the newly formatted drive into the USB prot of the Airport Extreme, the drive became immediately available.

Hope this helps

Tony
