Cannot access C: root directory of Vista computer from XP computer

I have successfully shared various folders, files and external drives
connected to
my Vista Computer, which I able to access with no problems from my windows
XP computer; however I have tried to share the C: root directory on the Vista
computer
and given all permissions for access, but when I try to access it from my XP
computer it will give me an error message stating that I do not have
permission to access the C: share. I have tried everything I could think of
for two days..
Can anyone help me with this problem?

Re: Cannot access C: root directory of Vista computer from XP computer

do not know if this fits your situation, but
if you install vista by booting from DVD, it installs it as "C". regardless of your choice of partitions.
if this fits your case, it is possible "C" is trying to share "C"

I don't fully understand what you are saying, however I did a new install from
windows XP, I did not have to boot from the DVD to install on C: which
contains my
system files.

Re: Cannot access C: root directory of Vista computer from XP comp

what happens, if you install by booting from DVD, vista installs itself on drive letter named "C". if you install from another OS, not dvd, then the drive letter of the selected partition is used instead.

Re: Cannot access C: root directory of Vista computer from XP comp

Ok, I have been reading the documentation all that I could find, and here is
what
I think is happening:

(1) I know that I can copy a folder to the Public Folder's folder, which I
can access via my XP computer, providing that I placed the folder in Public
Folder.

(2) When I try to share the same folder straight on, it ask for a user name,
so that
I can access it on another computer; I select my user name, then set the
permissions.

I suppose that my XP computer is to ask for that user name and password, but
is does not ask me anything I just get the following message on my XP
computer:

\\WINSTON\downloads is not accessible. You might not have permission to use
this network resource. Contact the
administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Access is denied.

I know I am missing something here....

Re: Cannot access C: root directory of Vista computer from XP comp

Ok, after aggrivating myself for 5 days, I finally figured-out the answer on
my own; here it is:
In the properties dialog box of the folder that you want to share in Vista,
select the "security" tab. under "group or user" add "Everyone, and set the
permissions accordingly.
