| | Re: Can connect to router but not to internet? Thanks, Jimmy, but this is not helpful! Microsoft's awareness of the problem isn't helpful, either! The list of different routers that do not work is pretty impressive, and now includes the new one I bought tonight. Really, the devices I'm using are approved LIVE routers, with the right firmware -- how come they, and all these others, are suddenly "not properly handling internet traffic" when they were just fine and still work with my XP and Mac systems? I know, not fair to pile on. Sorry... just so frustrating, and i have yet to see an official word on the problem. | | Re: Can connect to router but not to internet? For a wired router, if: - You have full access to your local network - You can ping internet sites, such as www.google.com - You cannot access the internet This is indicative of a problem with the way the router handles Window Scaling. This is a new feature in Vista that allows your network to automatically "tune" itself to get the best network performance. For more information on this feature, follow this link: http://blogs.msdn.com/wndp/archive/2...g_tcpip_2.aspx Now, even though this is a new feature in Vista, Window Scaling is part of the standards that these router manufacturers are supposed to adhere to. Unfortunately, since not many OS's do alot of things with Window Scaling, some routers will not handle it correctly. I'm sorry you are having bad luck finding a good one. I wish I could be more helpful, but I can only tell you what Microsoft has said. Which is, that they are reading your posts in the newsgroups and debugging the problem. - They are going to do everything they can to get this feature to work with all routers, if they can. - Download the latest firmware for your routers - If Microsoft comes up with a solution to this problem on their end, they will distribute the fix as a Windows Update. So, if you can directly connect your box to the internet every now and then to download Windows Updates, you should. - JB |

| | Re: Can connect to router but not to internet? I am going to have to disagree with this theory. I have been running Vista Beta for 1 week with no issues connecting to the Internet. My power went out and when I was able to get back on I was getting this issue. Checking the update log i have not received any updates since yesterday, so nothing has changed on my PC (software or hardware) nor my router and I am experiencing this issue. I have a WRT54G (linksys) router and again had no issues till a forced reboot "Jimmy Brush" wrote: > For a wired router, if: > > - You have full access to your local network > - You can ping internet sites, such as www.google.com > - You cannot access the internet > > This is indicative of a problem with the way the router handles Window > Scaling. | | Re: Can connect to router but not to internet? Ok you all had some decent ideas... except for a few which made me wonder if they were just random responses... I have had the same problem with a client's computer, can connect to LAN computers and even look them up by DNS name, but can't ping any internet DNS names while other computers on the network could. I tried EVERYTHING on EVERY ARTICLE ABOUT THIS. Heres what just solved it for me: In Local Area Connection Properties, right below Internet Protocol Version 4 there are two other items - "Link-Layer Topology Discovery Mapper I/O Driver" and "Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder". I unchecked them both, hit OK, and voila. Had nothing to do with hardware. | | Re: Can connect to router but not to internet? This has happened to me twice, both times after I introduced new Vista machines onto my network. (Environment is Vista -> Linksys Router -> Comcast) I DON'T KNOW WHAT CAUSES IT, BUT I DO KNOW WHAT I DID TO FIX IT. - Go to Device Manager - Find the Network Adapter - Uninstall it (but keep the drivers) - Scan for hardware changes The card will be "rediscovered" and magically, Internet access returns. Again, something got weird, and needed to be wiped out. I don't know if this will work for you, but it worked for me. -- nezzo ------------------------------------------------------------------------ nezzo's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/nezzo.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-v...ork/529912.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

Whenever you see "Unknown Network", just know that your Internet connection probably won't work. -- nezzo ------------------------------------------------------------------------ nezzo's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/nezzo.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-v...ork/529912.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

| | Re: Can connect to router but not to internet? That may be your solution......but it wasn't mine. Until I get a network working correctly I never enable encription. I had this problem even though there was no network encription. I think you will find that this problem doesn't have just one solution, but can be caused by a number of factors.....so, all the solutions offered here should be checked because any one of them could be the answer. -- wizz ------------------------------------------------------------------------ wizz's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/wizz.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-v...ork/529912.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

| | Re: Can connect to router but not to internet? Oh Wow!! This is a great bit to absorb or even try testing for someone lacking the computer know how of those here. I'm running Vista and attempting to connect via a public network. I'm connected to the network but cannot access the internet. A friend sitting right beside running XP on her laptop connects to the same network without any problem at all! This is a problem that only presents itself when attempting to access a public connection. I have a wireless network set up in my home through which I have no problems getting online. I fear adjusting many settings may create a problem with my home network as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks... -- lbs013 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ lbs013's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/116984.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-v...ork/529912.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

| | Re: Can connect to router but not to internet? hi everyone, i am having exactly the same problem as what people have described on here and have tried all the suggestions that people have put forward but no joy. i dont understand it because in all the other houses ive lived in the wireless has always connected but now that ive moved into my new house it wont connect and just says local connection. ive even tried to connect with an ethernet cable and after some fiddling around it worked but by doing this, it must have affected the wireless as my housemates computer couldnt pick up wireless then, yet i could pick up the net through the cable. Im starting to think that its the router that is rubbish and wanted to know what other people thought?would it worth buying a new router and seeing if that worked?thanks any answers would be greatly appreciated.i have no idea about computer, which youve probably already guessed by this message so yep any help would be ace!thanks Anna -- annalovescake ------------------------------------------------------------------------ annalovescake's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/118456.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-v...ork/529912.htm http://forums.techarena.in |
