Vista - Connecting to the internet via External 56k modem

Hi to all my mum just bought a new comp from pc world today with vista pre
installed, we have tried several different pay as you go dial up account
phone numbers and accounts/passwords etc but no joy with getting connected to
the net, and occasional message saying no dial tone, but the modem is
functioning and correctly installed so not sure whats going on, its an
external 56k us robotics modem, any ideas will be greatly appreciated thanks

I also have the same problem, any answers very gratefully received. I did
phone the BT IT helpline (50p a minute), and they suggested going into set
up, modem, and then unticking one of the boxes (sorry I can't remember what
this is at the moment, as I am having to access the internet from a PC at
work), I now don't get the no dial tone message, but still cannot get onto
the internet, which is extremely frustrating.
