Map SMB-Networkdrive

Hello,

I want to Map a SMB-Networkdrive from a Linux-Fileserver, protected by
username and userpassword. By using Windows XP the connections make no
problems. But Windows Vista does not allow any connections except the server
allows a connection to a share without user/password-protection.

I tried it with disabling the Windows-Firewall, encrypted-password yes or
no, changing the usersettings etc. Nothing was successful.

Which settings must be changed?

Best regards
Olaf Kaminski

Re: Map SMB-Networkdrive

Dear Olaf,

I am having the same problem.
I cant connect to my linux smb server as it is not accepting my password
or username.
I suspect that Vista is reporting the username bad (like pcname\username)
I have no problems with windows XP.

If anybody has a solution would appreciate it so much.
As this seems as my only problem for now.

PS. Hope this goes to the right place as this is my first post

Best regards,

Re: Map SMB-Networkdrive

Dear Olaf,

I figured out the problem.
It is not the username but the password.
I checked out the logs and username is going correct to the smb server
but somehow password is going wrong.

Still waiting for help from anybody!

Best regards,
Kaan Demirtas

Re: Map SMB-Networkdrive

If one of you could get a network capture from XP-Linux and Vista-Linux,
that would be helpful in figuring out what could be causing the problem ?
Also if you try net use \\linux\share on a command line, what is the error
being reported ?

If I have time to do this you'd need all or some of the following (And
I'm not running Linux, but Samba 2.0.33 on freebsd )

1. tcpdump from both machines from the whole process?
2. Samba logs?
3. The results from command line?
4. Something else you deem helpful?

(My machine is subject to the broken net connectivity while behind a
stateful NAT firewall though, so the results might be inaccurate or
reflect that bug...)

Are the results OK to send in your company mailbox - Some parts of the
traces might contain information not really meant for public groups?

Re: Map SMB-Networkdrive

Dear All,

I figured out the problem and solution!

I learned that vista does not work with samba versions below 3.0.6

And the only solutions are

1. upgrade your samba to a newer version (this I cannot do)

2. Run secpol.msc

Under Local Policies > Security Options

Change the value of "Network Security: LAN Manager authentication
level" from "NTVLM2 responses only" to "LM and NTLM - use NTLMv2 session
security if negotiated"

I was warned to use the second option at my risk as it lowers security.
But, I didn't mind because Linux handles firewall and security.

to run secpol.msc I was unable to find the run... as in XP. So, I just
entered it in the address bar of My Computer window.

Hope this helps.

***thanks and credit goes to Beverly Brown for this info, thanks Beverly
