Vista Tutorial - the user profile service failed the logon

I have upgraded a network PC from XP to Vista Business, maintaining
networking on the local domain.

As it stands - administarator users can log onto the PC but other users
cannot. Other users get the mesage "the user profile service failed the
logon"

Can see this service is running in MMC and the network is active on the PC
so cannot determine is it Vista settings or something on the netwok?

Any errors in the event viewer? This search result may help,

This puts a Event ID 1521 followed by 1500 in the event log - neither give
any result when selecting on line help. Must be a different problem to the

I wish you gave us the description of the event. Any way, the 1521 and 1500 could be the profile issue.

It has nothing to do with Remote Profiles (unless of course you are using
those). I have had the same problem on my machine. A profile fails to load
and then the user is given a temporary profile. Problem is if you reboot your
machine while it is loading this NEW profile, you crap out your old one and
it won't login. This is a BAD bug and needs to be fixed. I wonder...did you
have Vista Ultimate?

Apologies, you are right the desriptions would have helped.

1521
Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is
attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will
not be copied to the server when you logoff. This error may be caused by
network problems or insufficient security rights.

1500
Windows cannot log you on because your profile cannot be loaded. Check that
you are connected to the network, or that your network is functioning
correctly.

It is a roaming profile issue, all our suers have roaming profiles. Usually
when a user gets to a station they have not used before, logs on - the
station pulls the profile from server. Once the profile is on the station the
user can log onto it if the station is connected to network - or not.

The new Vista station is clearly seeing the network, but only allowing admin
users to log on, other users just get the message I posted. It is not the
issue posted by Ravenhorn, as users don't get a temp profile.

It sounds like a permissions error -- the system isn't able to access the
directory where the profiles are stored with the user's credentials. When
Admins log in, their credentials are sufficient to access the profile
location.

Here's a possibility, though this isn't my area: The structure of the Vista
profile directory is different, so it might create a separate roaming
profile. Check the profile directory on the server to see if those admins
who can log in have two profile directories. If this is the case, you'll
need to give all users the "Create Folders / Append Data" for that directory
so it can create the profile folder. Check out

Excellent, yes didn't think to check the server admin profiles. You are
quite right, In the admin profiles location I have 3 admin users who have
logged onto this Vista station. They each have the ususal profile folders,
but they also have new folders there marked for example admin2.V2

If this is documented as an issue with Vista clients I'd appreciate a
pointer as the link you provided has nothing about Vista on it. Any further
input appreciated, but this is looking promising.
