Help networking XP computer & Vista

I have done all the suggestions (made network private, LLTD update on XP
machine, firewalls off, etc...) when I am on my Vista Machine I can SEE the
XP machine in the network map but when I go to "view devices" I cannot see
it. IIn the network map I can click on the Vista machine that I am working on
but I can't click on the XP machine. I can only hover my mouse and see the IP
adress, etc..Please help, I feel that I am close to solving this!

The map shows

Internet--->Network--->-Vista Machine
-XP Machine

Thanks!

RE: Help networking XP computer & Vista

emmaggy,

You seem to have gotten further along than I have. Are you networking
through the Internet? I'm trying to simply connect my Vista machine to my XP
laptop machine using a Crossover Cable, but it isn't working. Any suggestions?

ok heres a solution I found find the xp computer ip address
if your computer is running nortons security disable the firewall windows
firewall is ok to be on
open a cli window and ping the ip #
the xp computer should now appear on network
map a drive on the xp computer on the vista computer
after this the xp computer will be on network shortly after bootup

RE: Help networking XP computer & Vista

emmaggy -

I'm just starting to read here for the Vista network issues. There is
likely more expertise here - I'm a newbie on communities.

I just installed a Vista desktop on my home network and getting it to see
the other two XPs on the map was a piece of cake & you have done that. But
as you write, getting the Vista machine listed on WinExplorer for file share
access was very time consuming. I am able to file share now and see all the
computers.

1) I had to name the appropriate file level to "workgroup" so that on XP
you see:

My Network Places or Network
Entire Network
Microsoft Windows Network
Workgroup
"List of computers on network"

Then of course they had to change Vista so you see in WinExplorer just:

Network
"List of computers"

2) I have to turn the XPs on first, then the Vista machine. This is a pain
because if I want to network something and Vista is already on, I have to
shut it down. An MS phone help tech. I talked with on another problem said
that is the situation at the moment. I am starting to read around here to
see if there are other solutions.

3) You need to have at least 1 file approved to share on the home network on
each machine.
