Backup to a network drive

I'm trying to do a backup (using the vista backup wizard) to a hard drive on
my home network. The drive is a second drive in a windows xp machine. When
I try to designate that drive as the destination for the backup the wizard
wants sign in information (name and password). I tried the sign in
information for the machine I'm backing up from and the one I'm backing up
to, but neither one was accepted. What is the backup looking for?
Thanks.

Re: Backup to a network drive

See our blog post at
http://blogs.technet.com/filecab/arc...27/458871.aspx for details
on how to do this. You didn't mention which edition of XP you are using--if
it's Home Edition, you won't be able to use it as a target.

Re: Backup to a network drive

Hi Buzz,

If the computer is running Windows XP Home Edition, you cannot back up to it. If it is running Windows XP Professional Edition, you can back up to it but you need to change some sharing permissions on the XP computer. You can find instructions on how to change the permissions in this KB article: How to disable simplified sharing and set permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP.
