| | Vista - XP Networking I have a new computer running Vista Home Premium and an older computer running XP Home SP2. I am using a linksys wireless router with the XP machine plugged directly into the router and the Vista machine has a wireless card. Both can use the internet well, and can see each other on the network. I downloaded the patch on the XP machine to have the Vista machine view the XP machine in the network map. I have set the C: drive of the Vista machine to share on the network and have given permissions to everyone to have full control and have turned on all of the sharing etc. in the network setting areas of vista except the password protected sharing. I have enabled sharing on the XP hard drives but cannot seem to find where I can set specific permissions. Both are using the name workgroup for their workgroup, have differnt computer names which I can see on each, and I have the same login for my profile on each (as suggested in one posting) The problem - I can see the XP machine on the Vista machine but it will not open and cannot seem to find it even though it shows up in the map and under conneted devices. I try to diagnose the problem and it can't figure it out. I can now open the Vista machine on the XP but it will not let me open the C: drive, only the public folders. I did uninstall Mcafee privacy blocker, and spamkiller because I was having a similar issue with my Slingbox (the Vista computer could see the machine but could not connect) and it fixed that problem so I thought it may be a similar issue but it is not. Can anybody help me? |

Erik The Network Map is useful, but it doesn't affect Network Neighborhood (which is where I presume you're looking). What's the Network Location Type? <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/12/windows-xp-and-vista-on-lan-together.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/1...-together.html We could examine "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!): <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/troubleshooting-network-neighborhood.html#AskingForHelp> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...#AskingForHelp -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. | | Re: Vista - XP Networking Chuck - You site is amazingly informative. I think I tried everything but I got lost in the links a few times so I might have missed a bunch and after 4 days this is getting incredibly frustrating. I can now completely access the Vista machine (in the ipconfig and browstat below it is Office PC) from the XP machine (VIC) and can see the XP machine in the map and the network devices on the Vista machine but still cannot connect. I tried the ntrights on the XP Home edition machine just as you stated in one of your articles but after a "successful" result for the first 2 strings the 3rd and 4th string just listed the possbile commands for ntrights and did not return a "successful". So far I have Enabled NetBios over TCP/IP on both machines, synced the Login and password on each machine (afterwhich, I think, I was able to get into all of the files on the Vista from the XP), disabled the McAfee firewalls, made exception for printer and filed sharing on both machines, disabled the IPv6 on Vista and uninstalled it on XP, and a few other things I am sure. I did run the ipconfig and browstat on both machines, and here ore the results: XP Home (VIC): Before unistalling IPv6 (please note * it says NetBios over TCP/IP is disabled eventhough it is enabled under the advanced tab in WINS for the network connection) Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : VIC Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Mixed IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : oc.cox.net Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : oc.cox.net Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-E0-18-F7-2D-DD Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.102 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 68.4.16.25 68.4.16.30 68.6.16.30 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, April 28, 2007 9:30:38 AM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Sunday, April 29, 2007 9:30:38 AM Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-00-34-3A-BB-92-B8-82 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 2001:0:4136:e378:0:343a:bb92:b882 IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : fe80::ffff:ffff:fffd%5 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : :: NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled Tunnel adapter Automatic Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : oc.cox.net Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Automatic Tunneling Pseudo-Interface Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : C0-A8-01-66 Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : fe80::5efe:192.168.1.102%2 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Disabled ------------------------------------------------------------------- VIC again ipconfig after unistalling IPv6 Windows IP Configuration Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : VIC Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : Node Type . . . . . . . . . . . . : Mixed IP Routing Enabled. . . . . . . . : No WINS Proxy Enabled. . . . . . . . : No DNS Suffix Search List. . . . . . : oc.cox.net Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : oc.cox.net Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-E0-18-F7-2D-DD Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.102 Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1 DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 68.4.16.25 68.4.16.30 68.6.16.30 Lease Obtained. . . . . . . . . . : Saturday, April 28, 2007 5:00:12 PM Lease Expires . . . . . . . . . . : Sunday, April 29, 2007 5:00:12 PM ---------------------------------------- VIC's browstat results before IPv6 uninstall Status for domain WORKGROUP on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{4A0A9821-693E-4DD3-ADEE-B52B0B6DDAB5} Browsing is active on domain. | | Re: Vista - XP Networking Chuck - - I read the articles and Microsoft information. As you said, the browser was Office-PC the Vista machine that was able to see the XP machine (VIC) so I needed to increase the IRPStackSize (I had to add it first as described in the Microsoft article you referance on your website). I started with 18 because the default is supposed to be 15 and it says add 3 to increase. In intervals of 3 i began to increase with no help. When I got to 46 I stopped because, for this reason or another I am not aware of, not all of my startup programs started in the bottom right corner. When I try to open the XP machine it gives me an error code: 0x80070035 - "the network path was not found" I did not include that last time and I am not sure I even saw it. Clicking on diagnose it says "Cannot communicate with VIC(192.168.1.102). Network diagnostics pinged the remote host but did not recieve a response." Any other ideas? - Erik "Chuck" wrote: > On Sat, 28 Apr 2007 18:00:01 -0700, Erik <Erik@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > > >"Chuck" wrote: > > > >> On Fri, 27 Apr 2007 10:24:01 -0700, Erik <Erik@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > >> > >> >I have a new computer running Vista Home Premium and an older computer > >> >running XP Home SP2. Erik, An error 53 aka "network path was not found" can have many causes. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/06/mysterious-error-53-aka-name-not-found.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...not-found.html The most commonly seen cause, in these forums, is a personal firewall blocking SMBs. Ping packets dropped is almost always a personal firewall, or network corruption, problem. <http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/your-personal-firewall-can-either-help.html> http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/0...ther-help.html -- Cheers, Chuck, MS-MVP [Windows - Networking] http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/ Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience. | | Re: Vista - XP Networking OK - - apparently I am the village idiot. After reading and re-reading your suggestions and articles on your website I went back to the McAfee firewall. It was disabled along with everything relating to it. It was such a bulky program anyway I was going to get rid of it in favor of NOD32 which I have heard is pretty lite and works well. Instead of just disabling the firewall I unistalled it (as you suggest and I may have overlooked) and low and behold i have access to the XP computer. I cannot thank you enough for doing what you do on these sites for everybody. A hopefully brief follow up: I have done the following in order to fix this problem (eventhough it may have just been uninstalling the McAfee firewall that needed to be done) so should I and how would I reverse any of these things, or do I need to? 1. Synced the login and password on each machine (not a big deal if I have to keep it) 2. ran the ntrights +r SeNetowrkLogonRight etc. (4 line command though only the top 2 worked) - 3. Added the IRPStackSize reg_dword value to the registry in the correct spot that was not there before and left it set at 21 4. enabled netbios over tcip on both machines 5. and probably 10 other things I have forgot about. I am guessing that if I do not see anything wrong right now I should leave it as-is? and lastly (hopefully) is there a donation spot on your website I can contribute to? You rock! - Erik "Chuck" wrote: > On Sun, 29 Apr 2007 19:22:03 -0700, Erik <Erik@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > > >"Chuck" wrote: > > > >> On Sat, 28 Apr 2007 18:00:01 -0700, Erik <Erik@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > >> > >> >"Chuck" wrote: > >> > > >> >> On Fri, 27 Apr 2007 10:24:01 -0700, Erik <Erik@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: > >> >> > >> >> >I have a new computer running Vista Home Premium and an older computer > >> >> >running XP Home SP2.
