Network issue

I'm having an issue with my home p2p network. My setup: 3 xp home, 1
linspire linux, and a newly built vista ultimate. I also have an lan-server
enclosure with a 250 gig drive used for backup. I can read and write to the
shares on all each machine. My problem is, from the vista machine I can see
the lan-server but it takes an extremely long time for a file (a mp3 for
instance) to open. That is if it opens. Sometimes the system freezes and I
have to power off.

I hope I'm making some kind of sense.

David

Re: Network issue

What OS is the server running? How fast is the server's hardware? Is any of
your network hardware gigabit?

I know Vista has some network issues but I'm not a network guy so not sure
what to tell you...I've heard MS is working on it.

I have no issues reaching either a 2003 Server or the Windows Home Server
CTP, on a 100Mbps wired and wireless network.

Re: Network issue

Dana,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry if I didn't make myself clear, but as I stated
in the original post, it, the lan-server is an external drive enclosure with
a 250 gig hard drive.

I can see and write to the drive sometimes. When a file, that I click, opens
it's very slow ( like 2 or 3 minutes). Other time the system will freeze and
the only way to recover is to power off. I have the lan-server set up with a
static ip address as suggested in it's documentation.

Also, I'm not seeing this issue with xp or linux and I don't have a problem
vista and the xp or linux systems. My network hardware is a Trendnet
wired/wireless router and an 8 port linksys switch and the lan-server drive
is hooked into the router.
