Vista - No connectivity with 32-bit programs.

Vista Home Premium 64-bit on Intel Core 2 Duo 965 chipset. Whenever my
internet connection is interrupted and then fixed, rarely-ADSL, *ALL* 32-bit
applications no longer can connect to the internet. While that is happening
all 32-bit programs also crash on exit, from WoW to 32-bit IE7. 64-bit IE7
works normally and I am typing this message from it now. I experienced a
similar problem back in Vista 64-bit RC1 on a DIFFERENT system. (AMD Athlon
64 nForce 410 chipset)

Last time I had this problem, about 1 month ago, a system restore fixed the
problem. That is not working this time.

P.S. Network chipset is onboard Marvell using latest driver from vendor's
website

Just a clarification, when I said that all 32-bit programs crash on exit, I
meant those that request internet access.

Is there anything in the Event logs?
Do you have a router protecting your computer that is between that
computer and the modem?
Define "interrupted" - what interrupts the connection?

I do have a router and it worked well for the other 2 computers on my
network during my problems. Interrupted, meaning stopped. The 2 primary
ways my ADSL can be interrupted: a power outage or a loss of the ADSL link
from problems in the field.

The problem is fixed now, and I will explain everything I tried. I disabled
the integrated Marvell chipset and tried a NIC with a RealTek 8169 chipset. I
first used the default driver and then one through Windows Update, no change
in my problems either way. For the heck of it I pulled the NIC in addition to
disabling the onboard network and I still get the exact same crashing
described earlier.... IE/Opera/Office 32-bit crash on exit. My assumption
from here on is that, somehow, the crashing apps are related to the loss of
network access and that some corrupted component in Windows is sending junk
data to my 32-bit apps.

I tried using the "diagnostic startup" from MSCONFIG and, again, no 32-bit
internet access and crashes on exit. The only way I could rid myself of the
crashing programs was through safe-mode without networking.

The last thing I tried was a system restore from booting right off of the
Vista DVD. Now I am back to my original configuration with no problems, no
crashing 32-bit apps and Internet access.

Hi,

Sorry to topic-hijack but I the same issue here. However even a restore from the vista DVD hasn't helped. I'm faced with doing a full reinstall and i'd rather not.

64bit apps can access the net, but 32bit cant.

Ie 64 works, IE32 doesnt. FF doesnt work, but minefield (FF for 64bit) does work.

Same with other apps. Closing the affected app causes the same errors as above.

Any ideas ?

and what is in the system event logs in the new thread.

when did this break? what do you mean by "restore from the Vista
DVD"? recovery? overwrite install? OEM recovery disk? what computer
brand/model?
