won't get IP address from router or see outside of router

My father-in-law was messing with one of our Vista computers while we were
out of town. Our router had a firmware update and crashed and he started
messing with the Vista computer and somehow got it into a state that it will:

1) No see the name of the router and only says "Unidentified network"
2) Will not get an IP address, only a local IP address i.e. 169.xxx.xxx.xxx
3) can't see out to the internet only local computers.

When I got home I saw that he had tried to get the computer on the network
by going through the wizard to setup a PPoE, which I am not on.

I have tried uninstalling the network adapter, but somehow believe that him
going through the wizard has caused something to be stored in Vista that is
preventing that machine from getting out to the internet or getting an IP
address.

How can I disable / remove the effects of him going through that wizard and
getting that computer back to its normal state.

Thx

- kevin

Try a System Restore to before he messed around. Start Orb>Search
Box>System Restore

RE: won't get IP address from router or see outside of router

Thanks, I tried that and it didn't resolve the problem. I've even hooked
this computer directly up to the cable modem and it still will not get an IP
address. the TCP/IP properties are also setup to accept a DHCP IP address.

Then I'm sorry but I don't know. Someone else with more experience in
undoing Vista networking mess-ups will need to help you. My apologies
for being unable to give you the answer.

Re: won't get IP address from router or see outside of router

Try setting the TCP/IP properties for a fixed IP address,
something like 192.168.0.99. Read the cable modem and router
manuals to see what range of LAN IP addresses they normally
hand out via DHCP, then select something in that range.
Also, have you looked at:
