Cannot access shared drive from network

I'm trying to set up Automatic file backup. I have Windows Vista Ultimate on
both pc's.

When I try to set it up, I get a msg that "\\xxxx\f is not accessible. You
might not have permissions to use the network resource." (where xxxx is the
name of the computer).

I can see both pc's on the network, but can't access drives or folders from
the other pc. Network Discovery is on for both pc's. File Sharing, Public
folder sharing, Printer sharing and Media sharing are all turned on. Password
Protected sharing is off.
The drives on both pc's are set to be shared with "Everyone" permissions and
"Full control".

The security tab on both drives for Administrators (which is the type of
user for both pcs's) is set to "Full control".

What else do I need to do in order to have permission to access these and
also update files.

Re: Cannot access shared drive from network

Bill,

I have found that "Everyone" is essentially "No One". What I do with shared
drives in Vista is to remove "Everyone" from the share, and replace it with
accounts, groups and permissions which are appropriate. This has worked
flawlessly for me.

Re: Cannot access shared drive from network

John, I tried that (adding me specifically and also the Administrators group)
and it still didn't help.....

Re: Cannot access shared drive from network

Hey guys,

I called microsoft and they told me you can only go so far with windows
vista. The user folder that contains the documents and pics and so forth is
not accsessible in vista because of certain system files. I added everyone to
my permissions and was able to reach the c drive finally, however you can not
get to the "user" folder.

Re: Cannot access shared drive from network

Bill,

For me Vista is part of a domain, so many things are handled that way, (user
accounts, addressing and such) but that is only part of the picture. So many
things are just second-nature, that I have to think about what is done
instinctively. There are many changes in Vista from what was present in XP,
2000, and NT4 and earlier. I gather that you have several PCs which are not
domain joined, but in a workgroup setting. I also gather that user accounts
and passwords are the same on each PC. From what you wrote, Network
Discovery and File Sharing both being on is the correct first step. Beyond
that there are many things which come into play. It must be assumed that the
PCs can see each other on the network (can be pinged, for example). After
that, user accounts, passwords, sharing and permissions are involved. Even
without sharing, the various folders all have permissions; they are similar
issues, but not the same. What I wrote about eliminating "Everyone"
permission, was (for me) about being able to have local access to all of the
folders on the local hard disk. Then, separate from that, was setting
permissions for any share(s) which are created. They both are involved. In
my own case, I did not want "Everyone" to even have access; since the PCs
are domain joined, I wanted different access by Group, from the domain
controller. This has worked quite well for me, no difficulty whatsoever.
Beyond this, I would have to stop and think what else it may be.
