Vista - Re: Connected to Internet but Vista doesn't believe it.

That *may* verify that you are connected to another modem
but does nothing to check Internet connectivity.

BTW in addition to the procedures and tools mentioned in that article
there is also a much more comprehensive Network Diagnostic tool
(at least in XP--I assume it would still be in Vista?) E.g. Run...

netsh diag gui

(also entered via various other means such as the Networking applet
in the Control Panel.)

So? Do you have the proper driver in Vista, the proper configuration, etc?

So? Talk to the provider. They should be able to help you ensure your
configuration is correct and help you diagnose the problems you are having
connecting.

I had already tried the steps listed in the Microsoft articles, but I went
through it again just to make sure, with no effect.

I have tried four differnet internet providers. I can't even get the
handshaking to connect with MSN and netzero. With Earthlink vista says that
it is conected to the internet, but IE7 still says that it cannot connect to
any web sites. Mozilla says the same thing.

I would also note that the machine I am using came with Vista Home Premium
installed. HP claim that it was designed for Vista. All the drivers for the
hardware are the latest available and Vista's device manager and diagnostic
tools report that the hardware is working properly.

I've also tried turning off the firewalls to see if that might be the
problem, but this had no effect.

The providers have been of little help. I suspect that they are just using
the articles that can be found on the Microsoft support web pages. (As a
side note for anyone that's is interested, Earthlink has a habbit of putting
you on hold when they come to the end of their checklist and then not coming
back.)

What does "no effect" mean? You are using a diagnostic, not just a repair tool.
No effect might be an appropriate comment about a failed attempt to use
a repair tool but it gives no useful information about a diagnosis.

How does Vista say that it is connected to the Internet?
Did you use that Network Diagnostics tool that I mentioned?
So you scanned your system with it? And everything PASSED?

You're still leaving steps out. What about the Diagnose Connections Problems...
tool? What did it say?

Also, switch to a cmd window and just enter nslookup
Does it show you one of your DNS server addresses cleanly?
And can you do lookups with it?

You're really not giving anybody much information to try to help you with.
Remember, your words have to substitute for what our eyes might notice.
