Vista Tutorial - Simple File Sharing

Hi there,

How do I enable simple file sharing thus far it has not proved simple.

We have 2 computer desktop Vista Ultimate and laptop Vista Home Basic we
want to share a folder and all its contents which is in the Documents
folder.

Both computers have just one user who logs in with a password and we are
using a Belkin N1 router.

The only way we have got this to work is by adding another user to each
computer so the laptop user is added to the desktop and the desktop user is
added to the laptop then we can share the folder and its contents.

Problem here is at the welcome screen we have 2 users to login to we don't
want that and each time when we first boot up the computer to share we have
to enter the user name and password on order to share the folder and its
files.

Surely there must be a simpler way than this.

If we delete laptop user that was added to the desktop and the desktop user
that was added to the laptop then we get the following message when we try
to access the folder \\Office\ is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource.

What do we have to do?

Any ideas would be most helpful and yes we've trawled though the newsgroups
and help files but thus far we are stuck.

You can have as many as users you want and they don't need to logon for sharing. For example, you can create two users userA and userB on the computer A. userA logon on the computer while userB logon computerB. The userB should be able to access the computerA for sharing.

Hi there,

Managed to sort it by going into the Security tab of each folder I wanted to
share and adding Everyone with full control and now all the computers on our
network can see the folder we wanted to share.

a much easier way would be to setup a workgroup, enable network discovery,
file sharing and public folder disable password protected sharing and
delete the extra unwanted user accounts

make sure that you do this on all computers and make sure you spell the
workgroup name right..i have my workgroup appropriatley named 'workgorup'

Yet he has posted his problem in 2 newsgroups and has
not received a direct solution.

In order to make shares work on his 2 vista computers he
has had to create an extra user. His wife has one
computuer he has the other. To "share" files they
created a workgroup then created a second user on each
machine to allow that user to share the files

Computer 1 husband with 2nd user wife
Computer 2 wife with 2nd user husband

The problem is that when they start their computer both
users are on the startup screen, they only want one.
Husband wants Husband on his computer. and Wife wants
wife.

I'm interested in your solution as I have the same
problem.

See this for help hiding the extra account(s) from the welcome screen. I use
this on one of my Vista Ultimate desktop machines to hide a special account
I setup.

Did I do something wrong I did say thank you and did manage to sort it out
but this last solutions looks good as well just didn't find that when
trawling the web.
