File and Printer sharing turned off on reboot

Hi,
Every time I reboot the computer it turns of file and printer sharing - most
annoying. I set file and printer sharing as on in the network and sharing
centre and then in the firewall. It works fine. When I reboot Vista (or some
program) turns it off. I am running Vista on 2 machines and have 2 other XP
machines all on a workgroup together. When file and printer sharing is on
they all share nicely.

The other programs installed that might affect this are McAfee (its firewall
is diabled), Network Magic (this is set with sharing on all the computers and
the selected files).

Any help is most appreciated.

Best regards,

Simon

Simon,

If Network Magic is involved, you should probably start by asking them for
support.

Network Magic adds a layer of complexity on top of Windows Networking (plus
charges for the service). Any network that NM will make to work *can* work on
its own, if you have enough patience and persistence. Try getting rid of NM,
and fixing the problem.

Re: File and Printer sharing turned off on reboot

I do not have Network magic or any other third-party networking s/w
installed. I also have experienced "File and Printer Sharing" turning off by
itself after I have explicitly turned it on. Can someone please suggest a
fix? It is v.annoying to have something you have changed suddenly change
back to a default.

Thanks,
Dan

I also am a victim of the same random problem.

The differences for me are

(1) No Network Magic
(2) No McAfee
(3) No XP

Re: File and Printer sharing turned off on reboot

I FOUND MY SOLUTION!!!

In my case, it was in Lenovo's "ThinkVantage Access Connections" applet. It
is additional security that is applied at the CONNECTION level.

Here is how I fixed it:

1. Double click on the ThinkVantage Access Connections applet in the
notification area.
2. Click on the MANAGE button on the toolbar
3. Select the SSID where you want File Sharing to work, and click EDIT
4. Click on the ADDITIONAL SETTINGS tab
5. Next to "Network Security", click the SETTINGS button
6. The first option in Security Settings is "Disable file and printer
sharing". UNCHECK this box. Click OK for 3 levels of dialog boxes, then
close Access Connections

Although these directions are specific to ThinkPad notebooks, the same
principle may apply for other manufacturers' connection managers.

Best of luck!

Bill

Nah... The IBM Access Connections applet is very unique. More
trouble than it is worth, in my opinion.

Re: File and Printer sharing turned off on reboot

Eureka! That fixed it. Is this documented anywhere on
the ThinkPad? I don't see it. Lenovo should get the word out.
