Vista - networking and sharing

I want to be able to share among my vista machine and my two xp machines. In
very simple terms can you tell me how to do this?

Make sure all PCs are in the same workgroup. Make sure you have network
discovery/sharing turned on for all PCs. Then "share" the folders and/or
printers you want to be able to access. If any of this is wireless, make
sure to turn on the security features and turn off broadcasting of your
SSID. It also helps to use the same username/password on all PCs (not
required but it simplifies things). Oh...I assume you have already installed
a network (NIC, patch cables, router, etc.).

Tim, I was going to post a new thread, but maybe I can work this out with
you......

I have an XP and Vista, hard wired via Linksys router. Both computers can
see each other, printer shares properly, and I can share the PUBLIC folder
on the Vista with my XP. But, I can't share other "shared" Vista folders
with the XP. Note: the Vista can use all shared folders on the XP, of
course!

OK, I'm gonna take this one step at a time! I WILL solve this thing!
First, my Vista and XP have two different user names (logical, since we have
two separate users!). Could THIS be a part of my problem? If so, why? Why
would Microsoft require all computers on a network to have the SAME name!!??

Let me know, and if this is a problem, can I get around this by still
keeping my separate names? Thanks.

I think you would be better off starting a new thread. You'll be more likely
to get a better answer than I have.

I'm not a networking expert. But I'm reasonably sure that if you were to use
the same username and password on all machines your problem will go away.
Note that I am not saying this is *the* answer to your problem...at best it
is a workaround. This is the way I do it on my home network because I don't
need to have separate accounts. Because of that, I have never pursued it any
further. There has to be a way to make it work for you...probably through
adjusting file/folder permissions or sharing permissions. A new thread may
get your answer more quickly.

Thanks for the reply, Tim. I will post this in a new thread -- later. I've
GOT to solve this seemingly simply file sharing problem, but it's not a
vital thing for me right now. I just don't understand why I could share
files/folders SO easily with my XP and ME systems, yet SO difficult with
Vista. It's not about security (I think). And unfortunately, Microsoft and
the MVPs don't provide understandable answers. Many others have this same
problem.

Vista's firewall is different than XP's (two-way versus one-way). Have you
tried turning off Vista's firewall to see if that makes a difference?

Yes I have -- still no workie!

But again, no problem since this issue is not that important. I can always
copy files to Vista's Public folder for sharing with the XP (as I said
before). What I can't understand is WHY I can access the Public folder in
Vista from the XP computer and NOT access the other folders marked as
"shared!" Maybe the first Service Pack for Vista will ease the file sharing
situation --are you reading this MS??
