Vista - How can a giant corporation like Microsoft lack such common sense???

So you bring out a new operating system, but then your customers find the
most difficult thing they face is newworking their old system with their
super new one.

Vista - XP and/or XP/Vista. What a fundemental HASH Microsoft have made of
this! Running mixed system networks is now a nightmare!!!

I've trawled through various newsgroups and the internet and have not found
one straightforward reply as how to achieve a simple network between one
Vista machine and one XP machine capable of full file sharing.

I have read all they replies posted by MVP's, (whatever they are?), and no
concise answer has been posted.

Having reached the age of 67 and been in serious computing since the mid
70's I thought I'd seen it all but "MICROSOFT YOU'VE REALLY F'd UP THIS
TIME"

We are of of the same vintage and maybe similar experience and agree with you
in general because from the post on discussion groups reveal that a
considerable number of user are having problem networking Vista/XP.
Networking can be done, I installed network betwen 3 computers relatively
easy..
A couple of questions -
1. What type of connection thru a router or direct cable?
2. WiFi or cable from the router?
3. If router is the driver Vista enabled?
4. You need to ensure all actions are carried out as Admin!!
5. Workgroup/ passwords are identical.
6. Use the wizards (sharing/ networking) where you can!!!
I found the Microsoft Knowledge Base very helpful.as I sure you are aware
what worked for me may not for you.
I already had connection before I upgraded and most things went quite
smoothly.
Some of the thing I have mentioned you are most probably aware of / I am not
trying to tell you how to suck eggs.
I you advise what areas you are having problem, I may be able to help.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my rant.

I have just replaced 2 computers wired together and a wireless connected
laptop, (running XP) using a Linksys WRT54GS router. With a single computer
running Vista basic on the same router connected wirelessly to my XP laptop.

To answer your questions:-

1. New Vista basic computer wired to router, XP laptop wireless to router.
2. refer to above.
3. Router running latest firmware.
4. I am only admin at all times.
5. Workgroups the same, no passwords.
6. Been there, done that.

There seems to be timing issues involved in this problem. Sorry to sound
scathing about this problem but most users do not change all their computers
in one go to a new operating system, for fear of what is occurring now.
Microsoft should have ironed all this out before they released a half baked
product onto the market.

Hello Paul,
My guess is the frustration you are having involves not be able to share all
files like XP. Well Vista is much more secure and it makes it (by design)
more difficult for someone to have access to all your files. It can be done
by changing permissions but I would recommend just using pulblic files. Just

One thing I did was to disable the Personal Wireless Network setting in my
AV,s whilst doing the initial setup. Once I got things going I then reset the
AV,s.
The article ref. by Gloria is a good place to start, there are other
articles in the KB which will help, if other problems arise.
The stages I went thru are -
1. Setup Internet connections
2. Setup file & print sharing
3. Setup AV settings
