| | Does XP (client) even work with Vista Business (server/host) as VP I CANNOT for the life of me get this to work. BUT, it has worked flawlessy when I was connecting a XP laptop (client) to a XP PRO desktop (server/host) with the exact same STANDARD settings?! My Remote Desktop to the Vista desktop works fine also (can connect)? but the VPN doesn't function? (not talking about both simultaneously) so the conenction is alive...but when trying VPN, seems dead? Basically just want to setup a simple VPN between a Desktop PC (server/host) using Vista Business, and a Laptop (client) using XP. Using the BUILT in VPN software in windows, NOTHING ELSE such as other third-party VPN software etc. Just want to be able to connect to the desktop server drive to access files via interent and file explorer etc easily with NO hassle. Using the built in software with auto mode. All necessary ports are open (1723, 1701, 500) (3389 for Remote Desktop). All GRE VPN passthrus are enabled (WRT150N on server end; latest firmware etc; Vista) Even turned off router firewall, and turned off vista's built in firewall. Tried also with firewall on but with exceptions and necessary ports open). Block Anonymous Internet Requests also diabled on router (even tried DMZ mode to see if that would work) SAME Workgroup name on both pcs. Set server pc as STATIC IP. I have RUN OUT of ideas to get a SIMPLE VPN connection that worked fine using XP to XP scenario... seems SOMETHING in Vista Business is NOT letting it happen AT ALL. So, I am wondering if anybody else is also experiencing this...and if Vista is broke when it comes to VPN, Vista and XP????? Like I said, XP is the simple client, and Vista is the Server with incoming connection setup (auto, etc). Merely just enter the desktop (server) public IP address and enter password and just get same old errors: 628, 718 to name a couple I can get. Tried with laptop (client) via wireless connection and also JUST wired...so it isn't that. Server/host dekstop is always wired to router and cable modem. I have been a PC user for a LONG time now, and never had such trouble as this...for something that seems so simple and works in a XP to XP Pro scenario...but NOT VISTA. I have even contacted a IT person about it, and he mentioned to disable v6 TCPIP, which I also tried with no luck. I even tried enabling PUBLIC folders and MEDIA folders on the vista server/host end, no go...so disabled that for which I do not need to share PUBLIC and MEDIA folders. That suggestion also did not work. The sole PURPOSE of going to Vista Business was for VPN support since we had XP HOME prior that could not serve as a Host, so instead of upgrading to old technology, XP Pro (which a lot of people are choosing to do in fear of this type of problem maybe?) we choose to go the Vista Business route. Which all in all really like...except the one thing we need the most, VPN, does not work and I have pulled all my hair out over it....very frustrating. I have FOUND NO answers searching google etc also, which is weird. I guess nobody else has this same scenario problem???? Thanks for ANY HELP!!!! : ) Tim |

So i tried reassigning them differnt IPs. the WORK (server/host; Vista Business Linksys wrt150n) 10.1.1.1 (static server ip 10.1.1.20) and the laptop (mobile; client; xp pro; wrt54gs (for testing; this will chnage location to location) 192.168.1.1 still no go. I just don't understand why soemthing this simple that worked before just will not with all the correct settings? Does anybody know of any other VPN network newsgroups that are very popular? thanks!
