New to vista - help pls with vista and xp network

    Hi

I have just bought a notebook with vista ultimate 64bit on it. I have
another 4 computers (3 notebooks and one desktop machine) on my network with
XP pro on each machine. I normally have two of the notebooks wireless
connected to my network using a d-link g604t modem router and the other
    machines use the lan connections.

Up to today, my network has always been stable and each of the xp machines
can see each other and have been able to for years. However now I cannot
see the network from my new Vista machine - although I could for a short
period of time today while I was trying to set up the vista machine.

I have downloaded the link layer topology discovery responder and i have
installed that on some of the xp machines as I have been told that is the
way to get these machines to network, but i still see only my vista machine
when i look at the network on it.

I have turned on discovery, and sharing etc, and somehow I have managed to
map one network drive from an xp mahcine to the vista machine. I have
noticed that there has been a few minutes when the network was visible - and
it appears to be different if i use the wireless or the lan connection.

I have a static IP address for each of the network connections. I have
removed the norton firewall and am using the windows one.

Any guidance would be appreciated. I know that overtime i will get to like
vista - but right now ..... urrgggg.

    Doug

RE: New to vista - help pls with vista and xp network

can't quite remember...but while looking for a solution to get my Vista
Business and XP Pro to communicate via VPN, i think i ran across somethign
saying to enable the PUBLIC folder and the MEDIA folders to see if what u
need works? You could try that then disable them again to see if anythign
works? I don't use those (2) features either, so don't need them on...but
    worth a try.

keep googling.... i ran across a few pages with help for this....but did not
    save them.

i like Vista also, but man... seems like some MAJOR bugs for the most
important things...that just should NOT be in a primetime release..yes i
understand bugs will exist...but seems very rediculous ones! Macs are
    looking quite attractive these days!
