| | Cannot access share on XP PC I have a shared drive on an XP PC, which I can access from another XP laptop no problem. If I try and access it from my Vista laptop, I can see the computer and the shared drives on it OK, but when I try and open the shared drive i get the following error after a couple of minutes. \\xppcname\shareddirectoryname is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions. The specified network name is no longer available. I do not see anything wrong with the security, but it is a long time since I set up the XP pc. Is this likely to be a vista problem, given the xp laptop works ok, or have I got something wrong with my security. I cannot connect to a printer on this shared pc either.. :-( Any hints gratefully accepted.. Iain |

| | Re: Cannot access share on XP PC I have also just tried connecting to the public folder on the vista pc from the xp pc. I can see the folder ok, I can create a new folder in it from the other PC, but if I try and copy an MP3 file to that folder, I get Cannot copy filename, the path is too deep. If I copy a text file from the desktop to the public folder it works. if I copy the MP3 file, I get that error. This is all really frustrating. Stuff that seems to work really easily between my XP machines seems to be completely broken from the Vista laptop.... Not much wow so far :-( Iain "Iain-M" <newsgroups@gabhsann.demon.co.uk> wrote in message news:uAPFcwJzHHA.1204@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... >I have a shared drive on an XP PC, which I can access from another XP >laptop no problem. Not much wow so far :-( > This is all too common -- in fact, I think most people with the Vista/XP configuration who want to share folders have this. Unfortunately, there are people who provide solutions that don't work. Perhaps after many hours (days?) of fiddling with these "solutions" you may be lucky in making it work, but most of us who tried are still stuck with using only the Public folder. Will Microsoft fix this by making the Vista/XP connection a "simple file sharing" solution as it was with XP and ME? Probably not. Good luck. |

| | Re: Cannot access share on XP PC Hi Eric, I had seen that, but went through it again without much luck. i have my worgroup name set up same, file sharing enabled, Password access switched off, etc.. I then tried some lateral thinking and connected the laptop with a network cable and switched off the wireless network, and lo and behold pretty much everything appears to be working... So it is something to do with wireless networking... File sharing is working fine via a hard-wired connection... Too tired to investigate further onight, and looks like I have a workaround for now. Strange though, as internet access was working fine via wireless, and the XP laptop is fine on wireless. Iain. | Vista Home Premium 32bit | Re: Cannot access share on XP PC I have a similar problem. I just got a Vista pc and connected it into my network of 5 other XP machines. Plugged it into the router and can connect to the internet fine. It is a Private network as defined by Vista. I went to one of my other machines and typed in net view and I can see the vista machine but when I go to the vista machine and type in net view it sees nothing - I get an error 51 "windows cannot find the network path....etc". I have file sharing turned on and turning off the firewall makes no difference. Anyone have any ideas how to get vista to play in a pure windows environment? I would have expected this to be simple but there you go! forgot to say that I can ping from an XP machine to the Vista machine by hostname and vice versa. | | Re: Cannot access share on XP PC System error 51 "windows cannot find the network path" could be name resolution, firewall and computer browser issue. Can you net view using XP IP, for example net view \\192.168.0.2? -- Bob Lin, MS-MVP, MCSE & CNE Networking, Internet, Routing, VPN Troubleshooting on http://www.ChicagoTech.net How to Setup Windows, Network, VPN & Remote Access on http://www.HowToNetworking.com "rmmeli" <rmmeli.316yx2@xxxxxx-mx.forums.net> wrote in message news:rmmeli.316yx2@xxxxxx-mx.forums.net... | | Re: Cannot access share on XP PC or just typing in \\ipaddress in the Explorer Window. Also, try pinging the other computer: Open a command prompt and type in - ping 192.168.0.2 (replace 192.168.0.2 with an IP Address of one of the other computers). Do you get an answer? --- Jeffrey Randow jeffreycentex@xxxxxx Windows Networking MVP 2001-2006 http://www.networkblog.net On Thu, 6 Dec 2007 17:15:40 -0600, "Robert L. \(MS-MVP\)" <noreply@xxxxxx> wrote: Quote: >System error 51 "windows cannot find the network path" could be name >resolution, firewall and computer browser issue. | Vista Home Premium 32bit | Re: Cannot access share on XP PC I can ping both ways XP->Vista and Vista->XP with both ip address and host name. Doing a net view by ip address does not work either. If I issue a net view from XP I get "System error 5 has occurred Access is denied." Any other suggestions? Thanks. |

| Vista Home Premium 32bit | Re: Cannot access share on XP PC Some progress.... I noticed on the XP machine I was working on that I did not have "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network Connections"turned on for my network connection. That has resulted in Vista not getting the System Error 51. Now both machines get the System Error 5. I have turned off firewalls on both machines to see if that changed anything but still get the System Error 5. Access Denied. What else do I need to check? Thanks. |
