Vista - Vista Business / XP Pro file Sharing

There seem to be many variations of this problem, and despite reading and
trying everything I have found my problem remains.

I have a new desktop with Vista Business, a laptop and desktop both with XP
Pro.

The laptop is wired to a router, and the 2 deskops attach via wireless.

Everything can access the internet. The Vista Desktop can see and access all
shared folders and printers on the XP machines.

The XP machines cannot access shared folders on printers on the Vista
Machine. Network Discovery, File Sharing, Public Folder Sharing and Printer
Sharing are all 'ON'. All machines are in the same WORKGROUP.

This is driving me to distraction, any help much appreciated.

Without being able to see your machines, here are a few suggestions for
things you might have missed:

1. On the Vista machine, make sure you have properly configured the
firewall to allow the LAN as trusted. If you have a third-party program
such as McAfee or Norton uninstall it. If your networking is now
working, replace McAfee and/or Norton (both really dreadful programs)
with an antivirus such as NOD32, Kaspersky, or Avast (free). The
built-in Windows Firewall is adequate for most people.

2. On the XP Pro machines, disable Simple Sharing from Folder
Options>View tab. Make sure you have passwords on all user accounts. You
can set the machines to automatically log into a user account (go
directly to the Desktop) if you like (see link below for both XP and Vista).

3. On the Vista machine, create user accounts/passwords that match the
ones on the XP Pro machines.

You're missing something, I just don't know what. Maybe you have the
Vista machine set to a Public network instead of private? In any case,
go through the instructions at this link step-by-step again:

Pardon the butt-in. I have similar file sharing problems (as you may have
read) and none of the solutions to fix it work, including the lame MS link
you provided. I think the fix may be in the Security tab of the Vista
folder I want to share -- add a "guest" user and allow it full control.
Hell, I've tried everything else. Oh well, there's always the Public Folder
option!

Another butt in......LOL

Right there with ya.....I just posted a new thread on my situation.....
Vista makes it very difficult evidently.....I'm still trying to figure this
out as well.....

I'll keep checking back...

I'm sorry you found the link "lame". I think I'd be looking towards the
user (you) for claims to lameness. I've set up quite a few networks with
Vista and other operating systems and have had no problems. If you can't
figure it out, have a professional come onsite and set you up properly.
It will only take a few minutes.

I welcome all the 'butt ins'.

Where to start - the network is Private, I have tried guest user with full
control, I do want to go the Public folder route as I need to be sure
everything is constantly up to date.

Not convinced about have a professional come on site to fix it. I have been
using and and successfully networking PC's for a long long time. There has to
be an underlying problem or something that has been missed in all of the
setup instructions. There are far too many instances of this around for it to
be anything else.

I guess this is the end of the road on this forum, but if anyone comes up
with that 'silver bullet' please poist, I will do the same.
