Website found. Waiting for reply error

One of two vista computers on my home network has lost the ability to browse
the internet. I have a Dlink 655 router and a few XP computers also on the
home network. One of the vista computers can't use IE 7. It gets the "Website
found. Waiting for reply..." and just waits for a long time before timing
out. The other vista computer can browse the internet with IE 7 just fine.
All of the XP machines can browse with IE 7 as well. I have a combination of
wireless and wired connections. The computer that cannot use IE 7 has a wired
connection. On this computer, Outlook works fine. Diagnose and repair does
not find any problems with the Internet Connection.

RE: Website found. Waiting for reply error

Thank you for your answer!
I found out the problem by booting into safe mode with Networking. Mcaffee
doesn't load under that startup mode. Browsing worked fine.
I took the brute force mode and reinstalled all of Mcaffe. I didn't just do
that proxy service.

RE: Website found. Waiting for reply error

FYI,

Mcaffe posted this on their site...

Announcement
McAfee recently released a product update that caused problems for some of
our customers. We apologize to anyone who may have experienced issues.

McAfee has released updates to address these issues automatically. We have
also created a secure web page with an update tool to help resolve any
remaining issues, and to confirm that you have the latest protection. We
strongly encourage you to visit the site and run the repair tool, even if you
are fully protected. If you are having Web browsing issues, you should still
be able to reach this Web page. Information can be found at:

RE: Website found. Waiting for reply error

I had the same issue on a friends Dell XP computer I was trying to fix.
(Website found, waiting for reply)

I had thought my issue was firewall based. But Firefox worked fine.
I tried disabling active services but that did not help
I tried reinstalling IE 6 ( http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378 )
I tried reinstalling SP2
I tried upgrading to IE 7
I tried other minor fruitless en devours
(all of this with reboots at each significant step)

What I did do that had worked for me
Uninstalled IE 7
Uninstalled SP2 (with many warnings things may not work after)
Reinstalled SP2, Success!

I haven't reinstalled IE 7 as of yet, I wouldn't expect any issues in doing
so. But I must check with the owner if they want me to first.

So to sum up my experience, it seems that SP2 was the issue, and doing a
reinstall was not enough. I needed to be uninstalled first then reinstalled.

Hope this helps someone out there.
