Folder available offline but files not available

While a folder is set up as available offline, all included file appear but
cannot be opened. I use to do this on XP and it was working perfectly by
saving a copy of the file localy on my notebook and sync at each log on.

How can I do this with Vista Business sync tool?

Re: Folder available offline but files not available

Cedvr,
1. Were there any errors in sync center when you made the folder available
offline?
2. Does the error opening the file happen when you are connected or
disconnected from the network?
3. What is the error you get when opening the file?

Thanks,
Shubhankar

Re: Folder available offline but files not available

I have the same problem. Vista Business on an SBS2003 domain.

The folders and files are marked as 'always available offline' and the
checkbox is greyed out, however offline availability is 'not available' for
most files, however a few are available offline. I have not found any
correlation between the available files and unavailable files as they are all
configured the same way. The available and unavailable files are mixed
throughout all folders and rules out an individual folder mis-configuration.

When attempting to access one of the 'not available' files when disconnected
from the network I receive an error stating the files is currently
unavailable.

I've checked the disk space available for offline files. The space limit is
several times larger than the space necessary for the files I wish to be
available.

I'm stumped. This problem is preventing me from working outside of the
office reliably. Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Re: Folder available offline but files not available

Update:

After a little playing around I've confirmed the problem to be related to my
SBS 2k3 server. After reseting the offline files database and attempting the
make the files available offline manually again, I receive errors stating the
files cannot be opened because they are in use by another process. This
occurs for any file or folder that is shared from the SBS server.

I am able to add files without incident from a different server in our
office running 2000 server. These files are synchronized properly and
available when disconnected from the network as expected.

Is there a default setting on SBS that might prevent me from making files
offline on Vista? Is anyone else having this problem?

Re: Folder available offline but files not available

Hi Scott,
It sounds like you might have opportunistic locking disabled on your
server. Offline Files needs this feature to be enabled on the server.
Here is the KB article that talks about how to enable to disable it:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296264/en-us
Let me know if this helps.

Thanks,
Shubhankar

Re: Folder available offline but files not available

I am having the same problem, and the oplocks fix (KB296264) didn't help.
Vista Ultimate laptop, fully updated; file share is on an XP Pro SP2
desktop. Oplocks fixes placed in XP machine's registry to no avail.
Permissions set to "Full" access on the share. Can't find anything more in
the Microsoft KB on this, but there are plenty of posts about this problem in
various internet newsgroups.

Still having random files listed as "not available" after an allegedly
error-free sync by the Vista laptop. Interestingly, sometimes if I manually
sync the file(s) in question multiple times, they will eventually become
available when I go offline. No rhyme or reason to how many attempts it will
take to be successful.

Very quirky behavior.

Re: Folder available offline but files not available

I am unable to see if tell if this has worked on the clients machine as I am
not there and cannot test, but would you ALWAYS receive a sync error in the
sync center if this was the problem?

I am receiving no sync errors from sync center. All of the files are "Make
Available Offline" checked, but many say Offline: unavailable

Thanks,
Jason

Re: Folder available offline but files not available

I have the same problem under Vista Business working with a SAMBA share on a
machine running Mac OS X.

When I mark a folder 'available offline' I get errors for every file in it.
The CSC cache does however grow by the size of these files.
The files are visible in offline mode but cannot be opened.

So far, I have disabled SMB signing in the Group Policy Object Editor and I
have installed the following hotfixes.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=935663
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938092
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=941067

None of the above solved the problem.

I'm hoping to find a solution through this thread.

I tried this fix. It did not fix our problems. Files still do not sync.
All of the files are checked as "Available Offline" but offline availability
says "not available". No sync errors ever reported in sync center.

Hope MS fixes this soon or Vista is going the way of ME
