Vista Tutorial - Why do all my programs want to access Internet?

Why do all my programs want to access Internet?

Almost all the programs I use want to access Internet, when they don't have
to at all. I usually block them (I use ZoneAlarm), but I'm a bit worried
concerning what information is sent via these programs. Anybody can help?
