| Guest | Connection but no Internet Hi. I'm having a problem connecting to the Internet through my wireless network (call it "Sam") on my new HP PC. I did connect easily on day 1, after setting up the initial connection and filling in the SSID and other fields. "Sam" (my SSID) was identified as my network, and the wireless connection was fine. I downloaded all Vista updates. The next day, I connected an Ethernet cable to the PC to improve the signal strength, and the problem began. The Ethernet connection didn't work, but a second network named "Sam 2" was set up, which I removed. Here's the status now: The Network and Sharing Center show My PC connected to "Unidentified Network" (not "Sam"), but with no connection (red X) to the Internet. The next section of that screen shows Access: local only, followed by two connections, Local Area Connection and Wireless Network Connection- (Sam). I have tried all the Vista repair options (get new IP address for Local and Wireless connections, unplug router) to no avail. One of the Windows updates I installed was a wireless adapter driver update. I have not yet tried to roll that back or uninstall it (and the update is not available to reverse through Update.) What steps should I take next to resolve this? Work on the wireless adapter? Why is my SSID (Sam) showing now as ""Unidentified Network"? I was thinking of reverting to the HP factory system setup recovery and just starting over. Would this clear up any problems with changes that may have been made to the adapter or connections? Thanks very much for your advice. Rick |

| Guest | Re: Connection but no Internet Thanks...I read those and other posts and links but no suggestions seem to correct this. It may be relevant that the Network Center screen shows Access: "Local only". Followed by the Local Area and Wireless Connections...to the Unidentified network (the router SSID "Sam")...but no Internet (red X). Any other ideas welcome. The "Access: Local only" must mean something, right? Thanks. -- Rick "Robert L [MVP - Networking]" wrote: > There are many posts about "unidentified network", This post may help, > > Vista: unidentified networkThe Network and Sharing center will identify the network as "unidentified network", with limited connectivity. | Guest | Re: Connection but no Internet Robert, I neglected to add...under Network Connection Details for the Wireless network connection...the IPv4 address appears wrong (169.254.64.126) as does the subnet mask. Is there a way to change these? May be the problem? Thanks again. -- Rick "RickD" wrote: > Thanks...I read those and other posts and links but no suggestions seem to > correct this. | Pass Me a Beer | Re: Connection but no Internet... LIMITED connection Ok, I'm having a very similar Problem... I have had my New HP computer with Vista x64 for about 5 months. It's been hardwired to the Net for months working fine. I just moved.. got internet hooked up and on here at the new condo. I'm upstairs and the main computer with a Netgear Wireless router is downstairs.. so I went and got a Wireless card.. Hooked it up and my internet worked... the first day ONLY. I did automatic updates cuz computer was down for alomst a month. after the updates I did a restart.. and after the restart it asked me to do another restart.. witch was odd.. I did it and the restart never was completed and my comp crashed... Windows fixed itself cuz it went to a previous state witch it was working properly and now my internet doesn't work.. I can see and find like 6 networks in my Condo and surrounding area.. my wirless card picks up 6 networks.. 4 unsecure and 2 secure.. Mine being one of the Secure lines.. so I can connect and type my password and it connects.. and identifies and says CONNECTED.. yet when i click STATUS it shows LIMITED connectivity.. No matter what I do it ALWAYS says LIMITED. I called netgear and went through 2 hours of tech support that wasted my night. here is the problem tho.. my internet works.. My Wireless card works.. It connects and I CAN use the internet.. let me repeat. I CAN use the internet.. I can connect and play my online games with STEAM.. I can connect and download music with LimeWire.. I can connect and use ITunes.. but THATS IT. I CANNOT browse using internet explorer or Firefox. so I can do everything i usually can with internet but I can't browse or anything. It still to this day says LIMITED connectivity and I'm completely stuck. CAN ANYONE PLEASE HELP... |
