Issues with file sharing between Vista and windows 2000

I am having issues file sharing with my new vista computer and my old windows
2000. I first tried using my router to create a network. I could get both
computers onto the internet without any issue. My 2K computer could see the
vista computer on the network but when I tried to access it would tell that
the vista computer is not accessible, network parth was not found. My vista
computer could not see the 2k computer. I tried just connecting the 2
computers using a ethernet crossover cable and had the same results. Any
suggestions of what I am doing wrong.

thanks

RE: Issues with file sharing between Vista and windows 2000

I have a similar issue too. The difference is that I (for now) don't want an
internet connection, only a network with a crosslink cable.

The situation is:
PC 1: Vista and XP, PC 2: Win2000
XP vs Win2K: everything ok
Vista vs Win2K (the same 2 PCs): Win2K sees everything, Vista doesn't list
the 2K in the Network window. The strange thing is that if I enter the name
manually ("\\whatever"), it can open the address properly.

Network discovery in Vista is on.
Any ideas? For example turning on something like network discovery in win2K?
But then why does it work in XP?

The above link will help.
Firstly you have to make sure that all computers have the same Workgroup
name; Vista has a changed default workgroup name.

Second, in Vista's Network and Sharing, turn ON Network Discovery, change
public to private, turn ON file sharing, and password protected OFF.
If you don't turn password protect off in Vista, you need a password to
access from XP, which you don't have!

thanks Mike
I haved used that link before and I still can't get it to work. I made the
changes you described. I do have the networks named the same. When you say
change from public to private, I assume you mean a public network to a
private network? Any other ideas? Again thanks for you help!

Yep; private network is for home or business.
Public network is for wi-fi spots; so increased security.

RE: Issues with file sharing between Vista and windows 2000

Vista needs LLTD responder for network discovery. I just realized that there
is NO LLTD responder for Windwos 2000. Thus, I think there is no way to get
it working properly.

Issues with file sharing between Vista and windows 2000- ViktorErdly

Turn off the firewall for Symantec's no good security system, and all will be well. Leave Vista's firewall on or turn it on instead. I spent hours with Symantec about this and they do not have a fix, at this time.

Hi
Vista's Firewall is very good two way firewall. if you have special needs
you can look at the Advanced part of it too.
http://www.support4vista.com/tutoria...s-firewall.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
There is no reason to use other firewall instead of the Vista's Native one.
If you decide to use Vista's firewall, clean the system from any other
Firewall, Disabling is Not really getting it out of the system.
