    XP wont see Vista

I own a XP Home desktop and my friend owns a Vista Home Premium laptop. My PC
is connected to a wireless router (Belkin Wireless G Router) through a
Ethernet cable and my friends laptop is connected wireless. We both connect
to the internet. His Vista laptop is able to see my PC through his network
places but is unable to play my music through iTunes. My XP computer is
unable to see anything of his. We have tried turning off all firewalls and
turning on all sharing but nothing has worked. All we want to be able to do
is connect to a LAN game and be able to share our music through iTunes.

I already have the LLTD update.
    Both are same workgroup name

I hope someone can help I have been trying to figure this out all week.

This problem is frequently caused by a misconfigured or overlooked personal
firewall, or in consistent NetBT setting.

    http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2006/0...ing-using.html

There are several more gotchas, that Vista may present you with.

Or let's look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config
server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the
problem. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions

    Have you tried the following:
    In Vista Networking and Sharing:
    1 Network Discovery ON
    2 File Sharing ON
    3 Public Folder Sharing ON
    4 Password Protected OFF
5 and the Network should be set to “Private”

And have you made sure that the workgroup names are the same on XP and Vista.
By default XP is MSHOME and Vista is WORKGROUP; they should be the same.
Also "Shared Docs" in XP is called "Public Folder" in Vista

    RE: XP wont see Vista

Is there a simple walkthrough for connecting a small home network? I have a
similar setup: Belkin router connected to net. Desktop with Vista & a USB
network dongle, & Centrino equipped laptop running XP. I've tried running the
network wizard from the Vista Machine, but the XP machine said it had no
settings, or none it could find. Running the wizrd from the XP machine, it
said I had no removable media. It obviously doesn't recognise USB keydrives.

I don't see me using a network much, but I would still be interested in
setting it up, even if only as a geeky exercise. :-)

    Davey,

The Microsoft reference document is the best simple walk through. It covers
    issues relevant to Vista specifically.
    <http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/evaluate/vista_fp.mspx>
    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/net.../vista_fp.mspx

My tutorial covers more issues, including some which have been discovered here,
    as problems.

What seems simple to some folks won't be that to everybody. Computer networking
is NOT simple - it is damn complicated. Follow some of the links through my
blog, and you should get a feel for the complication level.

But read what you can, and ask questions. That's how this forum works best.
People asking questions, and other people answering questions. And not the same
    people every time either.

    Re: XP wont see Vista

Perhaps I should elaborate a little then, Chuck, so you have a better idea of
    what I'm trying to acheive.

The setup above is connected to an ADSL modem, and allows each machine,
individually or at the same time, to access the internet. Basically, they act
as 2 individual machines, bandwidth sharing.

What I'm trying to do is link them together into a mini network, so I can
move files back & forth, or play private multiplayer games. I'm not sure I
like the idea of sharing, as I thought that as soon as you open that up, you
open up your machine to the rest of the web.

As I said above, I tried running the wizards on each of the different OS's,
but each wasn't happy with the other, & XP's idealy wanted a floppy,
something that's not been fitted for years, and certainly not in my 14"
    notebook PC.

Which should I be using. XP's as the lowest, common denominator, or Vista's
as the most recent, and presumabbly most compatible, & how do I get them to
    talk to each other?

    Davey,

IMHO, Vista and XP are quite capable of co existing, and sharing, quite well.
You simply have to deal with a few more details. The wizards aren't necessary,
and in some cases just make the job harder.

If the computers are connected through the router, then they are reasonably
safe, and are not open to the rest of the web. If they both have Internet
connectivity, then part of the job is done already.

Why not look at logs from "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config
server", and "net config workstation", from each computer, and see what needs to
be done next. Read this article, and linked articles, and follow instructions

Whoa there bud, all that stuff in quotes just went straight over my head I'm
afraid. Not a clue what you just said. I've a fair bit of computer knowledge,
but not much on networking, I'm afraid. Whenever I've set one up before, the
setup programs and wizards have always worked for me. Now they're struggling,
    quite frankly so am I.

If those to links are in laymans terms, & show you where to find everything,
I'll be ok. Otherwise, I could do with the ijits version. :-)

OK, we'll take it the slow way.

Start by running "ipconfig /all" from a command window, on each computer.

    Re: XP wont see Vista

Hey to everyone and did I have a world of problems with vista and xp combatibility isues that no one told me about...lol.... cause I am here to give some valuable information on this isue that I was able to reproduce this isue and a salution for (me) but this could work for you or it might not? but hey we are willing to try somthing right? lol......

Okay I want to let everyone know the importance to my knowlage with vista and that is that I did not know much of any thing about vista and now after hours of work with it, I know more then I did before I messed with it....lol...lol.... which is good cause I wanted the experience before I got it on my new machine.

A friend of mine told me he wanted a program on his computer that was a xp machine and I was just finishing up hooking his wireless broadband up to it and getting it to see the linksys wireless router thats dsl with sbc so I told him well I can get that for you on here and just enable file sharing and then he can install it later if he wanted to and he was cool about it and I was too and then when I enable file sharing on vista and the xp machine I can't see the xp on vista and no vista on xp so what the hell is wrong? I know some of you all are getting half way where you see the machine but when you try to get access well you can't.

Well when this happened I had to get to the bottom of it cause my brain was thrilled to death at this puzzle that it was going to solve lol...lol.... and be hold I think it found it so here we go.... hold on cause it's a long ways there hahaha......

Okay so I did some surfing and every one has tryed everything and even by the book but there are some things that just have to be told by the ones that have the problems and not guessing on what could cause them cause we all know that with a computer there are more then 1 problem with them and they can happen at any time..... so you need input from the experienced ones so here is one right here.....

Ounce apon a time there was a computer that had windows 98 and then came windows 2000 and then NT And XP Oh No but then 95 was so cool and the easter eggs was nice in 95 but 95 hated to network with 98 if you all remember that you had to restart the computer all the time after making changes to the properties even though the computer never told you that you had too but you did and that caused refreshing that was sapose to work with the F5 Key but nope a restart was the best way.

Well I was messing around with windows easy file transfer that was made for vista and guess what they have it for xp too and why? huh? why would they need somthing like this for a xp when vista has it? I did not know ither but you have to have it some times cause like 95 and 98 there networking was not built on the same coding and so the restarting made it easy to refresh the way the programming was to see the other programming of the os and wala! Netwoking was in process....

    So Step One....

You can get this to work for every one you can get it to work but requires paitence and a good way with electronics and some knowlage about the workings of a network... experienced or above noob...lol.... okay

download windows easy file transfer for windows xp here.....
Download details: Windows Easy Transfer for Windows XP

get the tfrcable_x86.exe version for xp if the other gives you an invalid win32 application package but this one worked for me cause the other one gave me that message....

Now install it and then this is important turn off any 3rd party fire walls and I do mean every one of them and leave the windows fire wall on only if your that paranoid over protection and then put windows xp under WORKGROUP and not under Mshome(Default) and by default vista is Workgroup so restart xp okay good now supply a password to vista user account if you want to password protect the file and printer sharing cause this will be the passord for vista and your xp machine will have to have the user login name to vista account and the password to that account on vista as well and if no password is wanted then you will get a password confermation any ways and the user name is the account name under vista and no password is then needed and then choose Okay.

after you created the password on vista account if you did this or not does not matter but if you did not be shure to choose no password is needed and then be shure you set vista up as a private network and not public and then you will need to make sure you turn on file sharing and turn on the top selection I can't remember what it was called but the description is to make vista visable to any of the computers on the network that you will be using on that network and is right above file sharing but this will have to be on as well and no password or password. If you supply a password by default password is turned on to the printer sharing too. Okay now that this is set up and ready you will want to get xp to restart again cause this is where we want to refresh the new network like the 98 and 95 thing cause yeah we have to refresh and the only way is to restart xp so do that and let it load back up.

Okay now look to see if you are able to connect to the vista machine now.... you should be able to and if not then run the windows file transfer on xp and then run it with vista when the file transfer ask you for a key and to to type that key in on vista and you have to be in the welcome center on vista to see the file transfer or in system tools too I think it can be found there and this will wake up the xp connection.... and then exit out of it all after they see each other and if it makes the connection you know you are networking them together and they are seeing each other and if it gives you the error about the computers being to old then look for a firewall that is on okay but they should connect when there is nothing blocking it. This is a good diagnostic tool to have....

Thats all I did for this to work with me if you can't get it to work I am telling you have to to be sure that all firewalls are off except windows firewall because this will keep it from working and there is a thing on vista but I can't tell you where but I think it's where you can see if your firewall and updates are on like a security center on vista and there are some arrows next to it and you can see what all the firewalls are on your system that are active like it will say windows and then mcafee if you have that or Norton and so on and then it will say on or off next to them but you need all to say off except windows firewall okay.....

and another important thing it to restart that windows xp to refresh the darn network settings and for them to take affect because this is where I found it to work and this was because 95 and 98 did this to me and I tryed a lot more so who know what could have really done it but I am for sure xp hates detecting changed network settings on the netowrk just like it can't look for some usb devices while booting up and you have to unplug and then plug it back in after the computer is on.....

They have to be on the same network as well and after all of this you will want to transfer files with out the file transfer software so have xp have file and printer sharing to the shared documents folder in my computer area and on vista at the bottom of the file and printer sharing on and off swiches be sure to look for show me the folders that are being shared or somthing like that and be sure that the documents is being shared on vista and it will be a folder that don't have the public downloads and public music and public stuff cause this document folder is like the shared document folder under your account on vista and wont say google somthing in that document folder and if it does thats not the folder to share I think it may be shared by default but look for it in the network file tree on the left called shared documents or documents and it won't say public documents but just documents or shared documents I don't remember exactley what it said lol sorry.

when you find it right mouse click on it and click the share option but there are 2 ways of sharing it like manually is what you want cause you can click share and add the user to that and share it or some where there is an option to check mark you to share the folder and then you can type in a description about the folder and stuff and that is the one that you want.

after you have put stuff in the folder that you want to transfer to xp get on xp and see if you can connect and remember if no password then use a user name and thats it and okay and look for that shared document folder that should be shared.... and there is your stuff...... if not restart xp and try again to refresh cause the F5 key sucks and don't work lol...lol....

when trying to delete stuff from the document folder on vista and it don't let you then stop sharing that folder and a message saying a user is loged on to this and may disconnect them and are you sure just click yes then delete the items and then share it again.

I hope this works for you.....
