Vista laptop, XP desktop, folder sharing from laptop to desktop

I have a Vista laptop, where I'm trying to share a folder on my D Drive to my
roommate's desktop running XP SP2. I have set us up on the same workgroup
name, I have shared the desired folder, created a user for her to get access.
I can't see her on the network, nor can she see me.

Am I trying to commit an unnatural act? It wouldn't be the first time .

Any advice would be appreciated.
