Microsoft finally confirms Windows 7 for 2010 launch

It's all a silly misunderstanding, we tell you. Microsoft has been holding fast to its "three years" development time frame for Windows 7 since forever, the problem is that it's never been clear when that three year period started. Well wonder no longer, Microsoft has finally officially confirmed that the three years started at Windows Vista's general availability release, which was January 30th, 2007. Obviously that doesn't mean will have Windows 7 on midnight of January 30th, 2010, but it does mean we can look forward to sometime within that year for a release. Microsoft plans to give an exact release date only once Windows 7 "meets its quality bar for release." Sounds like a good metric to go by, if you ask us.

I seem to remember Vista's launch being long after the forecast date; indeed anticipation went on for so long MS had to come up with the free upgrade coupon with XP OEM systems.

However; from PC Pro;
Microsoft has submitted an early version of Windows 7 to the US government, sparking speculation that the successor to Vista may arrive sooner rather than later.

The fact that the US government has (presumably) a working version of the software indicates that Microsoft might be looking at next year after all. Given the current lack of enthusiasm for Windows Vista, Microsoft will certainly be keen to get Windows 7 into the market as soon as possible, although it certainly can't afford another lacklustre release.

I hate to be cynical but perhaps Microsoft should start the three year clock from the release of vista SP1 since I consider it the true launch date for a functional Vista.:)

This is about Windows 7, the next *Operating System* - not Internet Explorer 7 / 8.

RE: Rushjob- you have to remember they removed a few things from Longhorn to make it Vista - and kept one or two of them out before making Longhorn into Server ;08 - so they have already been working on it for a lot longer than you realize - the majority of the kernel changeover from the fee and open privilege assignations in XP to the restricted set in Vista is done - I suspect W7 is not gong to be *that* much different, but it will have all those goodies in it that were forcibly extracted much as in a root canal from Longhorn....

re: Shrinking dies - they already are - the 9800 GX2 are shrunken dies - hence them being able to fit dual GPUs on a single card....

And CPU dies are also shrinking as we have seen with the Penryns....

By the time W7 is out I would not be surprised if the CPU dies were smaller the 30NM sets and the GPUs around 45 or even less. But they'll still be like having a micro atomic explosion in your case in terms of heat :P

I sure hope so John, they did have some darn good ideas but the time restrictions were too great for those kinds of changes to occur. I kinda thought when they first announced some of them in Longhorn that maybe they were biting off a bit more than they could chew at the time. It was a fairly large list of very extensive and very low level core changes in a short time frame and I couldn't see it happening, so I wasn't really surprised to hear when they dropped some of them, but I was disappointed.

Long overdue changes...they really couldn't continue building on top of an insecure & fundamentally flawed system anymore, something HAD to change. They actually could have started this back in 1998 if they had taken the initiative, as they already knew back then that the core structure of the OS was flawed but they just continued with their "Bandaid" solutions in the next OS versions.

And in reality, they still can't do it completely right, if they did that they would have to basically start from scratch and it's far too late in the game for that now. They should have made that jump when they had the chance back in the 90's as it wouldn't have been such a huge disruption back then. But "compatibility" was the determining factor those days and that overruled any major rebuilds, so we had to live with those fundamental flaws from the original core design and put up with bandaid after bandaid called Updates and Service Packs for another 10 or more years.

Also I wouldn't doubt we see under a 25nm core soon, and I was reading on some really cool technology advances recently. I'll see if I can remember the URL and post it for you guys, it was an interesting new way for die manufacturing...actually it was more like "Growing" them with nano technology.
