Re: New Windows 7 Forum

Everyone looks at the GUI and sighs and thinks it's an old, tired concept now. But when you get to the next step - what to replace it with? - it's chin-stroking time. Round windows? Windows like tears in the fabric of phase-space through which data 'leaks'? Or Linux's 'wobbly windows'? (I mean, the idea of wobbly windows is quite fun - for an hour) The whole desktop metaphor is, simply, something that works and a lot of software consists of solutions looking for a problem. I quite like the ribbon though.

Re: New Windows 7 Forum

Good analysis Avatar.

I suppose, more than anything, the ability for Windows to let us customize what the desktop looks like and how it functions *natively* would be the biggest boost for me. I currently patch my files so I can have a nice pretty glass effect even on maximized windows - pretty, you might say, but it has functionality too - because Firefox doesn't always remember that it is not always meant to be the top most window, and covers up my tooltip from Weather Watcher Live, or else it covers my contacts on my Desktop feature from my WLM. At least with full glass I can see they are there so I know that WLM is working....

Re: New Windows 7 Forum

Thanks - yes there's something of a Puritan streak in some computing circles, inherited from the beard and sandals Unix guys who dream in Assembler and feel it's not 'real' unless it's a command line with - mmm! plenty of pipes and switches! Don't get me wrong, those guys were the pioneers and without them we'd all still be banging the rocks together, but hey, if you've now got several million clocks going spare per second, why not use them to make your desktop look nice? Sorry, I can't believe I said such sinful and prideful nonsense, sure and I was inflamed with lust by the sight of a naked chair-leg

Re: New Windows 7 Forum

I rather have a OS that does not protect my computer from me. I don't want it to interfere with $12,000 in hardware that is designed for performance.

Re: New Windows 7 Forum

Apparently there used to be a jokey acronym in the 60s, WYSIWIGY - What You See Is What IBM Gives You. Apple also uses a closed architectural model, but Microsoft - I think, to their credit - has always espoused openness. Do it, go ahead, put it in there sure why not? - only, don't blame us if it goes pop. Microsoft server products are gaining ground every day, even in the face of FREE competition (although 'Linux is only free if your time isn't worth anything') because they are intrinsically more locked-down and buttoned-up, and because the people using them are more competent (or less imaginitive). When I was new to PCs I was always getting crashes and blue screens etc - I knew that that was largely my own fault, but it was still fun (if occasionally expensive!) to experiment. If you want a machine that is highly configured for one task, say graphic design, get an Apple. But if you want a machine that is genuinely multi-purpose, from Quark to Quake, get a PC and set it up RIGHT, or, puny Human worms, you will feel my unbounded wrath...

Your Sincerely,
Galactus

Re: New Windows 7 Forum

Galactus often gets a bad press - it's just his priorities are different to ours, y'know?

Not much support so far. No posts now for a week. Perhaps it needs a little bumping.
