On June 27, 2008, Bill Gates transitioned from his day-to-day role at Microsoft to focus more time on his work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

Gates will remain Microsoft’s chairman and will be involved in select projects based on direction from Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer and the leadership team.

In a recently released video, Gates’ friends, family and Microsoft leaders tell the story about his amazing journey – from coding BASIC for the Altair 8800 to leading the world’s largest software company.
Watch videos about Bill's career and Microsoft's future.

Re: Bill Gates: Looking Back, Moving Ahead

Without Bill Gates I would not be where I am today and I believe Microsoft and the man himself has really improved everything we see around us, from the way we do banking, access information, share information, have fun, get news, improve logistics & manage information. Thanks Bill, you're a genius, but of course you already know that.

Re: Bill Gates: Looking Back, Moving Ahead

pfff bill gates is over rated
i know he made a lot out of nothing like the Beatles
however there would have always been someone or something ells to take its place
but hey that's just my opinion

Re: Bill Gates: Looking Back, Moving Ahead

I hate to think that without Bill G. I'd still be working on Commodore 64's.

I re-wrote the OS for it to make if faster and better, but it was still just an eight bit machine, with very limited memory.

Thanks Bill !

Re: Bill Gates: Looking Back, Moving Ahead

Lmfao - Ummm, no, without Bill Gates you'd probably be working on IBMs or Apples 0- but not Commodore64s - not today.

You're making the connection that because of a software company hardware manufacturers like Intel, IBM and AMD make their hardware. I beg to differ - the hardware advances would probably still have come about, with a crucial difference - the software would not be driving the hardware, and thus it would probably be better qality, but quite possibly more expensive.

Re: Bill Gates: Looking Back, Moving Ahead

If Gary Kidalls had been as "sales-productive" as William Gates III,maybe? things would have been different, but the Harvard "drop-out kid" had a vision of a pc in every home, and for 80% of us,succeeded.

Sure,it's fashionable to moan at MS,but that is missing the point.I am typing this via my laptop, using Vista.True,I could use Apple Mac,a linux distro-thanks Torlvald,or some other OS,but chose Windows as my best option.

I wish Bill well in his future venture.

And no,I have no connection with Microsoft.

Re: Bill Gates: Looking Back, Moving Ahead

I beg to differ that the number is not quite 80% - of course that is contingent upon your definition of "us"....
