Vista chief declares war on Apple

Beware the "Apple tax" says Microsoft exec

Lexton Snol
Brad Brooks, vice president of Windows Consumer Product Marketing at Microsoft, has gone on the offensive against Vista bashers, Apple and Linux as he personally "draws a line in the sand" and starts fighting for Windows Vista.

During Microsoft's Worldwide Partner Conference in July Brooks told the attendees: "Today we're making a statement. We're going to do things differently. We're going to tell our story - the real Windows Vista story."

Now Brooks has attacked Apple, talking about an "Apple tax" 20 times in an interview on CNET.

He states that Mac buyers face hidden costs if they try to add Windows to their Mac.

"There's a technology tax - Apple still doesn't have HDMI, doesn't have Blu-ray offerings, doesn't have e-SATA external disk drives that work at twice the speed of FireWire. And so you've got all of these things that are truly taxes.

"You know, that's the crazy part about it. If people want a Windows experience, then start with a machine that was built for the Windows experience. There's no question, if you look at it, and go to Apple's Web site today, their No. 1 selling feature that they're telling students as to why buy a Mac is because it does run Windows, and that you can get Office when you're running it in Boot Camp or Parallels. But, then you're just paying that tax again...

For most users, HDMI and Blu-ray is a $600+ investment. You can do a HDMI video card and Blu-Ray burner for $1000+. I went the Sony Bravia, Harman Kardon AVR-347 HDMI 7.1 1080p/24 DTS capable reciever, Sony Blu-ray player route. Why tie up my workstation watching movies.

It's about time Microsoft does something!

I really hope they do something big time to stop letting people switch to Mac.

Because maybe I am the only one, but I think OSX is just not a fun OS to use. People say its easier, but I highly disagree lol. After using it a while IMO is not even close to being as powerful as Windows.

I don't care which OS a person uses. I laugh at Windows on a MAC. Sounds like MAC has issues with sales allowing this.

Frizzie, I'm sorry mate. You've been had. Nobody could believe that Microsoft and Apple would ever be anything but the best of friends. After all without OSX there would be nothing to make Vista look good, and without Vista, Apple would have nothing with which to gauge how bad OSX is!

I declare war on Apple

What does Apple have that Windows hasn't had for years? Everything from development tools to applications and DirectX API`s...Apple has been around this long and they still cant get anything right or even close to the power of Windows, Its applications and Microsoft's tools other than their User Interface and now with Vista they even failed with that...

Well, they did make Quicktime. I didn't install it on Vista and have never needed it, but it's a good program that everyone should have one of, maybe, if only to say you've got it, and it will screw up your Vista install, but who cares? Apple working for you again.

You're not alone in this. I've thought this for years. I've been supporting Mac within our Windows domain for over 10 years and I just don't get how certain people think Mac OS is inituative and easy to use. They do make shiny hardware though

There's a change in Microsoft's attitude for sure and it's a good thing.
