Thanks for the heads-up Shawn. It would be a good idea to edit the active links that are still in your post (replace @ with [AT]) to prevent anyone from accidentally clicking on them.

Re: Warning: Microsoft Word Lottery UK Scam

On a more serious note, how does one display the 'Header' detail?

How does one read or interpret that detail?

Can one determine source and Country of Origin?

Can future comms be blocked?

Can originator be rendered defunct?

My guess, Myanmar [Burma] origin, from a Post Office.

Re: Warning: Microsoft Word Lottery UK Scam

This is not the first time that this sort of thing has been tried (and, unfortunately, it will not be the last). Have a look at this link (but DO NOT click on any links there): MS WORD LOTTO - MSDN Forums Note that the address in Bloomsbury, London is the same. It also mentions Nigeria, which is another clue that this is nothing but a scam.

Re: Warning: Microsoft Word Lottery UK Scam

Hi sassofalco,

on your more serious note Look for a view full headers option to show complete info - On thunderbird which is my email reader of choice you just select View - Headers - Full.
as for what can be done the simplest thing is to add the sender to your Junk list which should stop you seeing the next mail at least. you can also email the isp that the mail originates from which may induce action to get the account stopped. with cases such as this where a Brand is used it may also be worth e-mailing them to let them know of the scam. as this one actually uses a livemail address that may be even more use. the normal address is abuse@... and that should get to where it's needed. if anything gets done depends of course on the isp / company involed and how many complaints they recieve.

Microsoft, Yahoo team up against lottery hoax e-mails
Posted by Elinor Mills 1 comment

You know all those hoax e-mails that arrive in your in box saying that you've won a lottery? You don't click on them, obviously, but many people do, enough to prompt Microsoft and Yahoo to form a coalition to warn consumers about the scam.
Microsoft, Yahoo, Western Union, and The African Development Bank are partnering to educate Internet users about the dangers of falling prey to the fake lottery winner e-mails.

In such scams, victims are told that they have won a lottery, often in a foreign country, and are then asked to provide their personal and financial information to claim the winnings. In the current economic downturn, the fear is that desperate people will be more likely to take the bait.
The announcement of the coalition, made at the 6th German Anti Spam Summit in Wiesbaden, Germany, coincided with the release of Microsoft-commissioned research on lottery scams in Europe.
Of 4,930 people surveyed, 113 people reported losing money to an Internet fraudster in the last year. Twenty-seven percent of Internet users surveyed predicted they would become a victim of a lottery scam and more than half said lottery scam e-mails scared them off from buying things online.
