Windows Vista Service Pack 2

Windows Vista Service Pack 2 Build 16489

Microsoft has begun testing Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) and intends to ship this release in the second quarter of 2009. Note that there are no new features in SP2; this is a more typical service pack that aggregates previously-released fixes. Here are some screenshots from the first external build of SP2, build 16489.

Re: Windows Vista Service Pack 2

With all the hype surrounding the impending release of Windows 7 RC this has been pushed onto the back burner. My understanding was that Microsoft intended to get Vista SP2 out of the door long before Windows 7 final....so any updates anyone?

I'm waiting for the final to come up on Technet Plus. It'll be a while I guess.

Re: Windows Vista Service Pack 2

Microsoft need to get its act together. I had a lot of difficulty installing Service Pack 2. I tried the stand alone installer - it completed all three phases of the install and then stated it could not complete successfully and reverted back to SP1. I then tried the Windows update installer - same problem. Finally I found a Microsoft thread dealing with this problem it suggested this which worked (my battery was fine but I had to do the rearm) -

"Please check your CMOS battery to ensure it doesn't require replacement

Also, please ensure your system time is correct and Re-arm you machine, which will reset the trusted time to the current system time and then install SP2. To rearm run “slmgr.vbs -rearm” from elevated command prompt. (Note that you can only do 3 rearms on the same Vista installation!)"

This doesn't make any sense since I did an install in place sereral weeks ago and I needed to call Microsoft to re-activate Windows Vista 64 since I changed my hard drive.

Re: Windows Vista Service Pack 2

Did you disable your anti-virus? That's the usual culprit.

Yes I first tried disabling my Norton 2009 anti-virus and the firewall. It did not work. The successful install of SP2 was done without the anti-virus or firewall disabled but just with the rearm. Again this advice was from a Microsoft official forum. It appears many people have had a similar problem.

Re: Windows Vista Service Pack 2

I've never even heard of "re-arm" - well not in this context at least, and this bit "(Note that you can only do 3 rearms on the same Vista installation!) worries me....what if you've already done it 3 times, you are screwed? It's all moot of course as it hasn't happened to me....yet!
