Stop unfairly comparing Vista to its predecessor and its successor

It seems like everywhere you turn on the Web these days, there’s another article bad mouthing Microsoft Windows Vista and telling you to stay with Windows XP — arguing that XP is the greatest Microsoft OS ever. It also seems like there are just as many articles praising Windows 7 as our OS savior — and it’s barely even a twinkle in Bill Gate’s eye at this point. While reading these types of articles recently, I’ve begun to recall other points in the history of Microsoft operating systems and draw parallels with what happened then with what is happening today with Vista. In this edition of the Windows Vista Report, I’ll explore some of these parallels.

Re: Stop unfairly comparing Vista to its predecessor and its successor

i think these comparisons will go till the time Windows 7 gets released. I still remmember my friends used to bitch about windows Xp when it was first released and argued that Windows 98 was the best OS ever. Same happened with Vista when XP became a household name. I think this is basic human nature and lack of product knowledge.

Re: Stop unfairly comparing Vista to its predecessor and its successor

Hi MSDOS and welcome to the Vista Forums,

The thing is that a lot of the people who still rave about XP have known nothing else It's been around a long time and a lot of people grew up with it. and it's the old familiar friend.
But in this industry, hardware develops and the OS has to change to match, there are only so many service packs you can build before you have to start from scratch.

I personally think MS has done a good job with Vista and my experience with the Windows 7 beta is all positive, so far, so will watch with interest as things develop, as I have done with each OS from MS since early DOS

Re: Stop unfairly comparing Vista to its predecessor and its successor

i still like the early MSDOS , pretty nostalgic for me as i first got my hands on computer with MSDOS . I was in school then , brings back sweet memories but pains as i can not go back in time. They had 7 - 8 computers with Huge monster CPUs fitted with 5.5" floppy discs , Black screens with white writings. We used to do GW BASIC and play Space Commander , prince of Persia and Dave. The term virus was fairly unheard and the whole thing was quite a mystry.

I wish we could all be like that ....... all this time we have gained nothing but anarchy

Re: Stop unfairly comparing Vista to its predecessor and its successor

Hi,

The thing is DOS is still going strong - in the form of the Command line in Vista and will be I think Just as important in the future with Windows 7 - a quick look around this forum will show many solutions that start with "in a command prompt ... ".

In my times as a Network Admin it was always the case that a DOS box would be open somewhere on the screen.

These idiots can only compare things they don't understand. Vista works fine. Its the users who are the problem.

You guys are right, people tend to be biased towards the things they use quite often. And do not wish to change. So, they start bashing the new product. Same thing has happened with Windows Vista. I believe same thing will happen when Windows 7 comes out.

Re: Stop unfairly comparing Vista to its predecessor and its successor

Nothing makes me yawn quicker than a fanboi. Except maybe a thread full of them

Worse than the Vista bashers will be the "I told you so" crowd who sagely nodded their heads and 'advised' people through the bad days of Vista to wait for W7. I wonder who breeds all those high horses

Of course there are still going to be the haters who will bore you to tears no matter what

Re: Stop unfairly comparing Vista to its predecessor and its successor

had a custom built pc with vista home premium installed, it works fine and much better than XP. Thought XP was naff when using win98SE, but came to understand XP was better, but would not install vista on the XP box...

Re: Stop unfairly comparing Vista to its predecessor and its successor

I think you'll aways get people complaining no matter what OS it is, me I like whichever one I'm using at the time and have found that they all have their faults as well as their strengths.

Look how they crucified WinME when it came out, yet I never had any problems with it, in fact it's still running and part of my network, yes it does have the occasional hiccup but don't they all, you just carry on and work with it's strengths and make the best of what you have.

The same goes for all of them, technology is forever moving forward and so you keep building newer machines to take advantage of it, but it doesn't mean that the old ones weren't just as good in their day.

OK after that load of rubbish from my point of view I'll go and see what else is going on
