Silverlight build 2.0.40115.0 fixes a few minor bugs

Silverlight is still facing a very uphill battle against a Flash-saturated market, despite various milestones. Last month, the official Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) chose Silverlight for Obama's inauguration. Last week Microsoft announced a $5,000 Silverlight game developer contest, and two days later, Moonlight 1.0 was released. Microsoft's new Silverlight-only website for IT Pros, Microsoft Thrive, also recently launched.

Today, Microsoft quietly updated Silverlight to build 2.0.40115.0. The previous Silverlight build was 2.0.31005.00, released in October 2008. You can grab the latest build from Microsoft.com, or just wait until it trickles out through Microsoft Update. This is a bug fix release; here's what's new:

Please excuse my base ignorance,.......but what in hell does "Silverlight" actually do??

And is it really, really necessary to have it??

Re: Silverlight build 2.0.40115.0 fixes a few minor bugs

MS is trying to take over the market of flash players with their offering of Silverlight. It is very similar (but different) to Adobe Flash Player.

"Microsoft Silverlight is a programmable web browser plugin that enables features such as animation, vector graphics and audio-video playback that characterise rich Internet applications. Version 2.0, released October 2008, brings additional interactivity features and support for .NET languages and development tools. It is compatible with multiple web browser products used on Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. Mobile devices, starting with Windows Mobile 6 and Symbian (Series 60) phones, will also be supported.[1] A third-party free software implementation named Moonlight is under development to bring compatible functionality to GNU/Linux."

Thank-you echrada,

most en'silver'lightening! So basically then, it's programmable and it is most likely used by graphics and advertising designers, webpage builders, spin doctors, snake-oil merchants, and folks of that ilk?

......Hmmmmmm, echrada. I value your considered suggestion, however, suffice to say that the Sepoys are already so well provisioned with 'toys', weapons, and other instruments of torture and destruction, that giving them 'Silverlight' would serve no useful purpose whatsoever.
