Next Office version to ship in 32-bit and 64-bit versions

You learn the most interesting things when you poke around in some of the arcane files that are included with Windows 7 beta releases. In the most recent build of Windows 7 that I’ve been able to examine, I’ve confirmed that Microsoft plans to release its next version of Office in 32-bit and 64-bit flavors. That’s a detail that my colleague Mary Jo Foley didn’t discover in her December 2008 rundown of what we know about Office 14

LOL I'm still using Office 03. HATE the ribbon. They installed 07 on my school computers and it frustrates me....

Anyways, why in two flavors? That doesn't make sense...

But I want to get the beta!

Why not, at least that way it will run on both flavours of the OS, that's my interpretation.

You have the OS in 32 and 64 bit version so it makes sense to make the applications in both so that they will run regardless of which version OS you run. That way there shouldn't be any compatibility problems.

That's my 2 pence worth.

Well my point is, why not just leave at x86 and it works for both? If they do both, then people are gonna go "Wha?" and buy the wrong one, and then complain because it doesn't work right.

Office 07 works perfectly fine with 32bit systems. i do not see the need for 64bit systems.

You do not see the need for 64 bit systems????

There is plenty of reason to start making the switch from 32bit to 64bit... 32bit is old and out dated, time to get with the times... 64bit is MUCH quicker then 32bit......

Does anyone know if this means that office 2003 will no longer be supported?

I have office 2002(XP) and have been told no longer supported.

Maybe M$ should switch COMPLETELY over to x64 systems, and it would save the whole compatibility thing...
