I just wish i ever had 4 GB RAM. I say so because the cost of 4 GB RAM in India is equal to a low end new laptop. Although the technology here is developing but the costs touch the skies.

I jut bought the second 4gb kit because ddr2 is on its way out, didt want to have to search high & low for a matching kit.

Re: Do You Really Need More Than 6 GB Of RAM?

Thankyou Shawn,

For this interesting read, I am already using 8gig and have already noticed that in Vista my RAM normally sits by 29% and Windows Se7en by 19% used. I am unlikely to reduce the RAM that I have installed as I think the power saved would be small in comparison to the rest of my system.
The Energy usage of modern systems is already a factor in my decisions when I buy and although I want the best that I can afford, I am unlikely to buy a Gas Guzzler of the Computer world eg. two or more Processors, Graphic cards etc. until the energy usage is reduced to a more acceptable limit.

Just my two cents

Re: Do You Really Need More Than 6 GB Of RAM?

I use 8gigs but I also run a good amount of programs at the same time. At any one time I could have 2-3 games running multiple browsers, ventrilo and my music all going at the same time. I haven't really looked at my usage but with 8gigs I really don't care I know I have the memory to run it.

And as long as manufacturers are still pumping out DDR2 boards the memory makers will pump out the DDR2 kits. I don't see DDR2 becoming obsolete anytime soon. While DDR3 is kinda slow out of the gate or at least it seems that way to me.

Re: Do You Really Need More Than 6 GB Of RAM?

I'm kinda confused...is it possible to get up to 8GB RAM now for a standalone laptop?

Hi Fmjc001,

Most laptops will only have two RAM slots with support for 1GB or 2 GB per stick, but sure some of them can support 4GB sticks for a total of 8GB. An example.

My 7811 supports 8GB as well. But the price of two 4GB sticks is so high that I could get another decent laptop now. I will have to wait until the prices drop down.
