I don't think CPU's will ever get to 10GHz, and certainly not in quad core processors as 6 core CPUs are coming out next. Intel already tried playing the "fastest CPU in GHz" game and it didn't work too well

More than 6GB might not be needed, but like what a couple of people have said, I use a lot of ISOs and running them straight from the RAM is very fast indeed. My next RAM upgrade (which will be when I get to Uni along with an upgrade to a Q9650) will most likely be to 8GB, just for the convenience of having it there.

Re: Do You Really Need More Than 6 GB Of RAM?

I had a friend that was talking about someone having a terabyte of RAM. It was funny because he realized that he meant HDD, and we spent the next half hour imagining how we could put one terabyte of RAM in a computer.....

LOL, now that would be a fun and very expensive thing to try.

Re: Do You Really Need More Than 6 GB Of RAM?

gggrrrr those RAM are getting bigger and bigger in capacity and relatively cheap too i think i gonna upgrade my rig in 6 months time and hoping that those RAM would be much cheaper and Intel's latest processors would be less expensive (well, Intel need to battle the recession)

but for now 3GB of DDR2 RAM and an Intel C2D processor would be fine. I can wait for the next biggest recession SALE of the century!

Re: Do You Really Need More Than 6 GB Of RAM?

I don't think having more than 4 is necessary at all!
I recently upgraded my comp from 1 to 4 GB, a noticeable difference.
I so far have never seen it use more than about 2.5 of it at once.....

What really matters (when you have plenty of RAM) people, is the memory speed, and reliability of the manufacturer.

One of my good friends in my CoD4 gaming clan bought some "Mushkin" brand DDR2.
IT was advertised as being able to overclock it, specifically to 1066 MHz without any problems. He overclocked it to 1000 MHz, and after 2 hours of CoD4 his comp froze up.
Checking his RAM stick, it was HOT "(hotter than my video card (which runs at over 80 degrees celsius)" He downclocked it to 800 MHz and did not have any more problems...

Me too. Plus 8Gb will be more than enough for the next few years for sure. Unless your doing high end HD video editing or CAD or 3D rendering...You really won't need more than 8

Re: Do You Really Need More Than 6 GB Of RAM?

ohh yeah i remember there was a time long ago when someone said that all the computer needs is 640k of ram ...
look what happend a few years latter
then someone said sometime later than 1gb is all the ram you need and then some...
same with 2 and not too long ago 4gb...
same thing is going to keep happening...
eventually 6 and 8gb will not be enough...
applications will have more functionality and bring more to the table...
and will use that mem... (at least in a 64 bit system but you are already running it arent you?....)
but unlike those days there werent little notebooks that have a ridiculously slow cpu a small amount of ram and hdd...
netbooks will surely keep 32bit processing alive AFAIK
even with some of them atom chips having support for 64bit...
i feel most wont even dare touch a 64bit os (or even have it offered by a OEM) because of its performance drop compared to a 32bit OS....

****************ignore if wish as this is a rant (sort of..)**************
i used to do video editing on a 1gb P4 (which back then was a monster and purely SD video as you needed very expensive hardware to do HD back then and even if you did most of the time the output was SD anyways...)
today i have a dual core amd (since it was the only one offered that had a competitive GPU (every single tablet had either a x3100 or x4500MHD which was a big no-no for me and comparing it with hd 3200 its still beats them and then some..)
and all around package (most included 1 or 2 gb of ram, this one offered 3 upgraded to 4 and the new multi-touch has support for 8gb which i would totally want.. )
now i do AutoCad and Video Editing on this Machine and with a 64 OS and 4gb of Ram (not to mention a good IGP) i am happy with this laptop
************************end of rant****************************

It is purley the progression of technology.
