| Windows 7 x64 build 7100 & Ubuntu 9.04 | Re: Confirmed: Office 2010 will come in 32-bit, 64-bit flavors I think putting them both on one disk would be good. Then, when you install, it will analyze your system archetecture. If it is x64, then it offers both options, and if it is x86, then it just installs x86. This will eliminate people not knowing what the difference is. I am still planning on using OpenOffice though. For $300 for the simplistic version, M$ can live with it. ~Lordbob |

| Vista Ultimate x64 Service Pack 2 | Re: Confirmed: Office 2010 will come in 32-bit, 64-bit flavors The thing is with office is that it should be possible to produce an Install DVD with both x86 and x64 versions and an intelligent installer which offers the x64 as the primary option if the system is compatible, with a fall back option of x86 for those who cannot install x64 or have commercial/or other reasons to do so ![]() Using an "intelligent" (I believe it uses XML) install package, the installer automatically chooses the right architecture for your machine (it can be changed on 64 bit machines to install 32 bit OS). then depending on the key you use during installation, it installs the appropriate version. Following a logical line of reasoning not only will M$ incorporate both architecture variants on a single disk, it will probably also use an intelligent installer, minimizing confusion for the novice end user, whilst also allowing more experienced users to configure their installs with XML. M$ can't lose with this kind of forward thinking, making installations easier and less painful benefits everyone, that is, until they move all their software into "the cloud". |
