Confirmed: Office 2010 will come in 32-bit, 64-bit flavors

Last month, a very believable rumor started flying around in regard to Office 2010 shipping in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Check out ZDNet and Within Windows to see how the conclusion was drawn. Everything pointed to Microsoft finally offering a 64-bit flavor of its Office suite, previous versions of which have only shipped in 32-bit or 16-bit flavors. In an e-mail exchange with Ars today, a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that Office 2010 will be available in both flavors: "Yes, Office will have two separate 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Office 2010 will be the first to do this."

Thanks Emil,

Perhaps the change to x64 will really take off now that Microsoft's flagship is moving in the right direction.

I think it's a bad move. Not everyone know's what 32bit and 64 bit mean. People will get confuzzled and use open office or other program.

Which ones...the people who've been using Office since Office 97, or those that have never used Office to begin with, Which in today's business world is virtually none. Just about any office or admin job in todays job market requires some skill in Microsoft Office.

As to the availability of a 64-bit version, not really sure what to think. Office 2007 works extremely well under Vista x64, so???

Well if both versions come on the same disk, it will be less confusing when buying, as the a user who tries to install 64 bit on their 32 bit OS will just get given a message saying it's incompatible.

I think it's a good idea really to get 64 bit programs rolling out more and let 64 bit really take off.

The thing is with office is that it should be possible to produce an Install DVD with both x86 and x64 versions and an intelligent installer which offers the x64 as the primary option if the system is compatible, with a fall back option of x86 for those who cannot install x64 or have commercial/or other reasons to do so
