Paul Thurrott's Morro Review.

A precis follows for those who haven't got time to read the article.

Final thoughts
There's been a lot of interest in Morro/Microsoft Security Essentials and I think even the beta version of this product will prove quite a hit with users. It's free, effective, lightweight, and quiet and is, in other words, exactly what I'm looking for in a security solution. And it comes with no strings at all. As long as you're running a genuine Windows version, you can install this product without worrying about up-sell advertisements, yearly renewals, or other silliness. And you can do so on as many Windows-based PCs as you own. I'd like to see it just included with Windows, but what the heck: Free and easy is the next best thing. Microsoft Security Essentials is highly recommended, even in the public beta.

I uninstalled ESS and installed Morro yesterday. So far, i m quite impressed with its GUI and it uses only 4MB while scanning and 3 MB when idle. It has also received some certifications from AV comparatives and West Coast Labs. Wow, that's what i want.

Thanks JMH for the info. I also installed MSE on my fresh Windows 7. It's simple, fast and very light. I'm impressed by its performance. So far, MSE runs good.

Cheers...:)

I've seen the reports but for the moment will stick with my present security set up and just keep an eye on developments, my NOD32 was only renewed for another year beginning this month so I've got plenty of time to see if it fulfils everyones expectations before I have to decide ;)

Can some one post the link for the BETA download ?? I need to try on a friend's system with Windows XP , 128 MB RAM and 40 GB HDD and Celeron Processor. :D ... lets see how well it performs ...

My Computer

It's always good to see another free option.

It downloads a ton of stuff on first upadate - I reckon 140mb or more, dmex reckons more like 200mb.

So it's certainly not small.

I am currently Using Avast - 1mb at idle - less than MSE.

Still, a couple of mb of memory is inconsequential.

Another thing thet may, or may not bother you - it checks ( and I think , keeps checking) you have a valid version of Windows.

It also sends info back to MS ( anonymous they say).

As your Windows install does that anyway - you may feel that's a bit too big brother ( George Orwell - not the tv show).

It caught my attention earlier this year by some posters on this forum. I still use Outpost 2009 Free firewall along with Avira for protection. If the resources used for Morro are on the light side, it could be a viable alternative to the many free AV and Firewall products out there. Both of the products I use are really good and don't use much memory or resources. I'll stay with what I got...for now.

Great info, JMH...but like a lot of others I prefer to not have everything with MS,and if Morro does do validity checks and forwards other info to MS then enough said for me. I do like MS stuff...as an OS...but think they should stick to their core functions . Allow others who are experts in their field to provide add-on software etc. To date, MS have not had a good response to their forays into non-OS software,e.g. Live search etc. Even some of their Office type product add-ons,like Picture Viewer/Editor are done much better by other software makers. I guess I'm in the camp of:"prove you can do it better than the rest" camp. I have an inherent distrust of any monopolising move by any company in any field after a lifetime of being in business. There is an old saying :" the only good monopoly is the one you own" which I have found,to my own detriment at times,is true in regards to any industry which seeks to be the only one available , giving them control over where client money is spent.Again,as we all know..what is great in this version, often turns into bloat in the next...and that has ocurred countless times with PC software, good examples being the full suites of Nero, Nortons etc.:p
