It's all about money, Vista was acclaimed very critically and sales were not as good as planned so Microsoft needed a new operating system to get on the horse again. This time they really paid a lot attention to marketing, Windows 7 is probably the most pushed system from Microsoft ever, while it's not much more than just a repaired Vista. For the sales, the sooner the date, the better. But I see also another factor - open source is literally banging rhythm thru speakers, OpenOffice flourishes, while Word gets ribbon screwed and U.S.-banned, and major linux distro, Ubuntu Karmic has been planned for the end of October - Microsoft didn't want to be ashamed. Maybe this also led to Microsoft's decision to let 7 out asap. Dunno, just guessing.

But I know one thing. This time, I'm not buying. After a long time and money spent with MS-products, since MS-DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1, I finally have enough. Closed source has no future.

I think there were very benign reasons. After the debacle with the first release of Vista (mainly due to the hardware drivers not being ready), they originally wanted to give themselves enough time to get all i's dotted and t's crossed. Then they saw that they were making more progress than originally anticipated with a Beta and RC tests going very well - so they advanced the date. With black Friday and the holiday season not far away, that will allow them to pick-up a nice bundle of extra cash - and the initial results seem to confirm that.
What still puzzles me is why all of a sudden the XP crowd seems to jumping on W7 in droves - those are the same people that were bashing Vista. I just don't get it. What makes W7 so hot for them?

They were gullible & believed the hype & misinformation.
