Windows Vista enters last year of extended support

Microsoft's nine-year-old operating system, Windows Vista, will stop receiving updates in exactly one year from now. Luckily for Microsoft, most users abandoned Vista a long time ago when they made the move to the superior Windows 7 and therefore the company won't have to make too much of an effort to convert people to Windows 10.

Mainstream support for Vista ended four years ago during April 2012, and has since only been receiving security updates, it didn't even get new versions of Internet Explorer after version 9. With security updates being dropped, users will be much more susceptible to malware and should therefore migrate to a new version of Windows...

...For Vista readers wondering what to do about upgrading, you'll have to buy a license for a copy of Windows 10 or other supported version. Windows 10 is still gratis for users until July 29 but only for those coming from Windows 7 or 8.1.

I am running Vista on my HP laptop, Windows 7 on a Dell Optiplex 745. I really cannot tell the difference. I have an older Dell running XP, with the hack patch, allowing updates until 2019. Perhaps, someone will write a Vista patch allowing updates to go beyond 2017!

    A great old laptop, got refurbed from Tigerdirect. Came originally with Vista, had Windows 7 on it. I got a copy of Vista on ebay and restored it to its original spec. Vista runs great with 3gigs of ram.
Likely, you'll be able to use Server 2008 updates (from the initial release). A few of us Windows 8 users are doing that with Server 2012. It's gone for five months without a hitch.

Vista when it first appeared was new and fresh... different... and tbh I never had any issues running it.

It shows how much we are all different because I never took to W7 and would never have it as an OS of choice. W8.1 was good, very good actually, and the visuals of the start menu appealed to me.

What I don't like to see is the way MS have apparently put a spanner in the works with Vista updates such that many machines are rendered unusable for hours at a time as they try and update. Given that Vista has such a small user base makes it hard to believe that this really is down to 'lack of bandwidth or server capacity'. That has somewhat taken the shine off MS's approach (as did the constant W8.1 updates related to W10).

All that said, W10 moved the game much further forward and is currently my OS of choice. What's even more amazing is that my old hardware that original came with XP/+free Vista upgrade runs W10 very nicely.

But I miss Vista and would like to see MS fix the update issue for the remaining time Vista has left.

Aww. =/

I wish I was still using Vista on this PC, but I use software that requires Windows 7. :(

I only seldom have access to a copy of Vista now, but I may attempt to use Vista again sometime soon.
