eventually everyone will be on 64bit like from 16 to 32 no one uses 16bit anymore unless i am mistaken? will be nice to be able to just do a upgrade to windows 7 ultimate 64bit in a year or so when its released and all programs are windows 7 ready

everybody is already on 64bit, 64bit is the processor, not the operating system
64bit operating systems just take advantage of the speed of the processor, compared to 32bit

someone could be using GEOS or tomOS(based on 32bit MikeOS) but 32bit has capabilities of running 16bit apps.

Re: 64-bit: More than just the RAM

64-bit executables are fundamentally different in structure from 32-bit, which is incidentally why it's not possible to load 64-bit DLLs into 32-bit processes and vice versa.

The "Program Files (x86)" folder is there on 64-bit Windows to store 32-bit apps and their supporting files. 64-bit stuff goes into "Program Files".

Incidentally, the \windows\system32 folder contains 64-bit DLLs, while \windows\SysWoW64 stores 32-bit equivalents. It's the opposite of what the numbers suggest.

Re: 64-bit: More than just the RAM

Dumb me!!! I had to get a new computer because my other one crashed unexpectedly. I didn't know it it was a 64 bit at the time. I am finding out now that there are not very many software programs that support Vista 64 bit. I sure hope it gets better soon. I am having a pretty tough time trying to figure out how to do things. It is a challenge!!!! but I'm not giving up!!!

Thanks for this forum. I've learned alot. (although, I'm not too thrilled with Vista; and I didn't want it in the first place; but I had no choice!!!)

Oh well, again: Live and learn!!

Re: 64-bit: More than just the RAM

Oh, sorry, one more thing. I wanted to add some more RAM because I want more media on it and it was operating pretty slow. I have a HP Slimline Paviliion, Vista Home Premium with 2 GB. It said I could get more RAM and then it said I had the full amount. Does that mean I can't add any more RAM?

If not, what a bummer. I always thought you could add more RAM to a computer if you wanted to!!!

Should I cry or not???
