Re: disk defragmenter

I hope someone at MS will read this. The disk defragmenter in Vista is
useless. You can't tell whether it is actually doing anything (no active
graphs) and it reports back that highly fragemented disks do not need to be
defragged. After two weeks of using the beta, this is the most serious
problem I have found. Fortunately, I am using a dual boot with XP and have
both System Mechanic and Norton System Works on the XP system.

Re: disk defragmenter

i have a dual boot of xp and vista too.
the xp defragmenter is ok but the vista one needs lots of work.
you can report it as an issue if you want.
there is even a page where you can send them your comments and seggestions.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvist...s/default.mspx

for a disk defragmenter in vista use the one that you can download from this
site.
its called disk keeper. it works good.

It doesnt work on RC1 (as they clearly say its only for older builds).

I tried installing it anyway, but installation stops because I "dont
have rights" to install the diskeeper service...

Any workaround for this or we have to wait for a newer build from
Diskeeper Corp?

I really really hate vista defrag.

Re: disk defragmenter

No known workaround for Diskeeper (until they release a newer version for
RC1+).

O&O Defrag (Pro Version 8) works in RC1.

Which build?
I tried the last one and got the dreaded message "this software does
not support this version of windows"...

bah.

Re: disk defragmenter

Version 8, not the 8.5 available on the O&O website.
Interesting that the older version works, and the newer one does not.

Re: disk defragmenter

I tried both 8 and 8.5 with no luck on Vista 32. My error message was *the
application does not support this processor*. Interestingly, I'm using O&O
on the XPx64 side with great results.

Re: disk defragmenter

Hi,
Even though there's no cute gui;
Admin command prompt defrag works just fine now- it's free;and does just as
good;or better than O&O.
Trust me on this;tried out O&O; and Diskkeeper;both defrag with less
success then yur basic command prompt.
Yea; there's not cute pics;or colors;but checking using a command prompt
defrag analyze showed very acceptable results;as did analysis after
defrag;looking at the drive with O&O;after the command line defrag.
