problems with video files in vista

I recently got a new pc with vista home premium pre-installed. The problem I
have is with some mpg type files. Sometimes the picture is wrong and I either
only get have of the peoples faces showing or the aspect is like its been
shot too close to the people. After viewing I get an error message saying
that host process rundll32 has stopped working and then another message
saying that it was intel viiv that caused the problem. The thing is that I
have already updated the viiv software.

I am using a widescreen monitor. Do I need any special codec because of this?
