| | Re: Defrag Can't Complete Correctly How do you determine that you are only getting 4% defragged? My Vista defrag does not supply such information, so I would like to know how you got the figure of 4%. | | Re: Defrag Can't Complete Correctly Thank you very much, I was unaware of this option. And then I learned some more about it at this URL: http://www.howtohaven.com/system/vis...entation.shtml Doing a defrag analysis from the command prompt [c: -a -v] tells me that I have 3% file fragmentation, and that 'You do not need to defragment this volume.". I let Vista automatically defragment once per week, so it is apparently doing a good job. I wonder what % file fragmentation would be considered 'bad' so as to trigger a recommendation to defrag...anyone know? | XP Pro/SP3, Vista HP | Re: Defrag Can't Complete Correctly If the files you use frequently are heavily fragmented, such as the windows system files, paging file etc, then you will see slower bootup times, slower disk performance and other common effects of fragmentation. If the files you never/rarely use are fragmented, then obviously you wont notice much of a performance loss under normal usage conditions. But do note that fragmented files (used or unused) can cause fragmentation of free space and future files, leading to a self-propagating fragmentation problem, hence the benefit in keeping fragmentation low at any given time. |

Its best to avoid any threats to drive health. PerfectDisk 8.0 has a defrag at boot tick box, works under Vista 64bit, and defrags at boot if you tick the box. |
