Start looking periodically at any statistics for your iexplore.exe task(s).
E.g. use Task Manager's Processes tab (with all statistics in effect)
or use Process Explorer (similarly modified). Your symptoms can be
caused by resource shortages. One specific example is if GDI Objects
gets over 9,000 the symptoms you list would start occurring. You can find
further discussion involving this detail by searching for that string (in quotes)
using the web interface to newsgroups that you are using.

E.g. press Alt-7, type "GDI Objects" and then press Enter:

http://www.microsoft.com/communities...xp=&sloc=en-us

and after this post this thread will be added to those results. ; )

BTW although most of the references to GDI Objects in those threads
were initiated by me and several of their OP were specifically referring
to their symptoms while using Vista, I don't use Vista. Therefore I have
added a cross-post to a Vista newsgroup to try to make sure that you can
get Vista-specific responses.

Hi ZookeeperX,

You might check this to see if it is related to your problem.

Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers

and

You can use this tool to check with the above link.

Re: Right click stops working/New tabs stop working/Menu bar disappear

I have encountered the same problems. At least for now I have found the
simplest solution to be to "log off" and then immediately log back on. That
seems to clear the buffers or whatever and it only takes a few seconds.

Re: Right click stops working/New tabs stop working/Menu bar disap

Wow.... God spoke!
I hope.
God, I really hope.
I will have to get back to you (this post) after a bit of playing around and
following your instructions to the "T". Thank you, thank you.

As of now, I haven't spent enough play time online to see if my disabling of
the Dell add-on in IE has made a difference. I will do so tonight, and if it
hasn't...... well, I think God may have spoken. In fact, Task Manager has
just been opened and I'm watching it like a hawk. The last thing I'm thrilled
about, is if you are right.... then why did I just drop $2500 for a
resource-incapable machine?!?!?!!

BTW, thanks for the cross-posting... if it can help myself or anyone else,
then hallelujia

Thanks again,
-z

Re: Right click stops working/New tabs stop working/Menu bar disap

Well, now that's a real good thought, but it still leaves me having to
save/attempt2bookmark/print pages.... again, causing frustration and
backtracking my time which I'd rather not do.

I will keep it in mind if IE gets cranky on me when I'm less involved and
can afford the loss.

It is a great work-around idea; thank you!

Re: Right click stops working/New tabs stop working/Menu bar disap

Hey Robert,

I'm over here in the search for GDI Objects" where you said to check.
Wow.
Wow, absolutely amazing. I must offer soooo many thanks for directing me
here as I would have NEVER ended up here on my own searching for my problems.

What an amazing little place.... full of so much info; it's great!!
Thank you, thank you. I owe you one but could probably never pay up

PS: to all who catch this/my orig post (here in GDI-land) - it was
cross-posted here to help anyone who might need help. As mentioned prior,
Nothing GDI-related came up regarding my problems ....so, please know I'm not
trying to override any wonderful pertinent info found in the below posts
(search "GDI Objects"). I just couldn't find any info and decided to post my
own 'help me please'.... what can I say..... I had a moment.

And to all who find this post wherever you are in this overwhelming site; it
you've read this due to similar issues, as Robert said - click here:
-----
http://www.microsoft.com/communities...xp=&sloc=en-us
-----

You'll be amazed. learned, and perhaps scratching your head just a little
bit less. Not all info may apply, but I promise - you walk away having
learned something.

Thank you again Robert.... whether all or any might apply to me (still
testing .... you be my man!

Take care,

Not really. Use the option in the Alt-F4 dialog which says that you want
to try to restart all those same pages the next time you open IE.

Notice that I was only pointing out that GDI >9000 can cause the same
symptoms that you are reporting. It is one example of a more general
issue of resource shortage (which may be due to inefficient programming
or bugs (e.g., in the form of leaks) or just a lack of tuning needed to adapt
for a particular user's extraordinary needs.).

>

So, are any of the other numbers changing dramatically?
Try taking note of the numbers for whatever set of tabs you have
at that time. For this I think there are better tools than TM but
I suppose you could try using Alt-PrintScrn and saving however
many rightscrolls it would take to capture them all into a Clip Book.
(Assuming Vista still has clipbrd.exe to Run... but hopefully something
even better?) In fact for this case you could ignore cumulative statistics
such as page faults and I/O counts which could reduce the number of
screens you would have to capture.

Hmm... I just checked in Process Explorer's Help. It has a feature
which might be simpler than the proposed ClipBook idea. Supposedly
once you have selected your iexplore.exe process it could be just as
easy as pressing Ctrl-s... then finding the saved file and opening it
with Notepad. (Seems to work.)

<quote>
When you choose File|Save Process Explorer saves the contents of
the Process and lower pane, if it is showing, as a tab-delimited text file.
</quote>

Another option which would be more work to set up but which would ultimately
be more useful for comparing the statistics from multiple instances would be
to use PerfMon to keep a log of the equivalent statistics we are interested in.
And again, if there are any better tools now in Vista someone else is going
to have to point them out to you.

So, however you do it (even manually using Notepad <w>) get some numbers
and then close your IE window, using the option which says that you want to
reopen the same set of tabs the next time you start it again. Then compare
the set of statistics for the new instance of the browser with the saved set.
If you had a leak in the first instance it would probably be apparent as a much
lower statistic in the second instance (e.g. not necessarily GDI Objects).

BTW from the above search it looks as if you and WayneF could start commiserating:

FWIW I think that in spite of the thread's Subject that GDI Objects
may not be the issue.

Hmm... that poster was using XP but found an article which apparently
still applies to Vista too...

Re: Right click stops working/New tabs stop working/Menu bar disap

Robert,

I posted an update, however it does not include any suggestions that you've
posted here. That update was written late last night and I just ran across
this msg.

I will attempt to 'test' as you say below.
BUT....
as of now, no matter what the outcome of my testing.....
..... memory leakage, no leakage.....
IS THERE ANY ANSWER TO THESE ISSUES in your opinion?
Something to allow fairly trouble-free browsing.

Thanks again so very much for your interest and time here,
-z

Re: Right click stops working/New tabs stop working/Menu bar disap

Another alternative would be to try using the Firefox browser. You can
import your bookmarks and the functionality is comparable to IE but
apparently much of the architecture is different and (arguably) less buggy.
